February Test Drive!

Thinking of apping a character but not sure they'll fit in the city walls?

Have no fear, a meme for you is here.

Directions:
  • Use an RNG to choose a location and prompt, or wait for someone else to tag.

  • Post with your character with their name and canon on top!

  • If you'd like, leave contact info for people to get in contact for plotting and other such shenans.

  • Tag around! Make friends. Don't be afraid to chat OOC while tagging.

Locations

1.TRAIN STATION - The place where everyone gets dumped off at. Your first view of Ruby City, complete with informational posters telling you all about where you've ended up.
2. THE BEACH - Lovely year-round, though in the winter months, you're probably not likely to dip your toes in.
3. THE BLACK STALLION - A rather quaint bar. Supposedly, the burgers are great, but you don't see anyone immediately who's willing to serve you. Maybe you're meant to get it yourself.
4. THE OBELISK - The tall monolith in the center of the city marks the gathering place of many events, though right now it seems to be cold and dark.
5. THE CLOCKTOWER - Offering an impressive view of the city, several residents come here to clear their heads, if they don't mind braving the narrow staircase.
6. THE COFFEE JOINT - the front windows are warm and welcoming, and it seems there's always someone friendly enough to fix you a cup when you wander through.
7. THE CATACOMBS - Intrepid, aren't you? Those weird holes may beg exploring, but go too deep and you're going to be in a lot of trouble, considering the viciousness of the creatures held within.
8. THE CITY STREETS - All told, Ruby City is a lovely place, once you get past the fact that several of the buildings look derelict and on the verge of falling down. There's no harm in doing a little sightseeing.
9. THE PARK - You thought it'd be a lovely stroll, but the park is anything but friendly, if those approaching wolf-like creatures are any indication.
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like what we've come up with? Feel like picking your own place? There's a whole host of lovely locations to choose from in the City.

Scenarios

1. NEW ARRIVAL - Step off that train, walk down the street. People usually latch on to newcomers to try and help them out. Even if you look shy, the other residents probably won't be!
2. WATCH TALK - Feeling lost? Disoriented? Don't worry, everyone feels that way on their first day. Fortunately - if the signs at the station are to believed - the watch in your pocket can be used to talk to whoever else might be here.
3. BAD WEATHER - Aw, man. Whether it's snow, or rain, or just plain cold, today was definitely the wrong day to get dumped off in a City in the middle of nowhere.
4. A RUN-IN - Maybe you weren't watching. Maybe they weren't. Either way, you just bumped into someone. Perhaps apologies are in order?
5. HELP, IT HURTS - Clumsy, aren't you? Perhaps wherever the train brought you from wasn't so friendly, or you just tripped and twisted your ankle. Either way, you're in a bit of pain. Hopefully someone will notice your booboos and help patch you up.
6. HUNGRY - It isn't very obvious sometimes that restaurants are what they are, especially in a place like Ruby City. Where can a person go to get a bite to eat around here?
7. MISTAKEN IDENTITY - Hey, there's someone you know! --Or maybe not.
8. BEING FOLLOWED - Maybe you're just being paranoid, or maybe you've got a reason to be afraid. Whatever it is, it feels like there's eyes on you...
9. CURRENT EVENTS - None at the moment, but feel free to look through our <href="http://rubycity-ooc.dreamwidth.org/tag/event">event tag!
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like any of these ideas? Feel free to come up with your own!

This wasn't Elantra. This wasn't her beat. But Kaylin was walking the street like it was her beat anyway. She didn't know the laws here yet, didn't know the rules, but she was willing to bet walking around armed wasn't exactly encouraged. This place looked too orderly to be that much like the fiefs. Well, like Nightshade and Baron.

But walking with the confidence of an officer of the law was probably the best way to stay out of trouble. Would work in the fiefs, for certain. In the City... well... she hadn't seen anything here that resembled a uniform. So she acted like a beat cop.

Of course, that meant when she saw someone walking around in a mask, walking towards a building then stopping outside it for no apparent reason. Yeah. Time to check that out.

Unfortunately, whatever wonder gave her back her beat uniform of chain mail, leather, good boots, tabard, and her spell worked daggers... did not think to include her beat stick.

Well, they were trained to improvise, and authority was more than half of crowd control.

"Excuse me, sir," she said in the cool practiced tones that said "cop" on any world, "Would you mind removing the mask and explaining why you're loitering out here in the cold?" she asked. Not that she was certain that either was against the law... but law or thug justice, either way...

She would defend the city, even if it wasn't her city. She still wore the Hawk.

Erik's heart was hammering. More from getting used to the weather and from the signals his stomach was currently sending. He pulled himself from his thoughts of the food he'd allow himself to eat and how he wanted nothing more than to sit down and compose until then, and turned his gaze towards the...

.."A woman?" he thought, bemused at the authoritative tone she had assumed with him. He wasn't against the idea of women having power (very far from it, in fact), but when one was standing in the cold and trying to sort their thoughts, the last thing he needed was someone trying to show authority.

"Pray, if my leg was broken, would you ask why I was hobbling? I loiter because right now I can't do much else without risking collapse." He bristled, but didn't make any move to touch his mask. "My mask will remain on." he said simply.

"You are injured?" she asked in that same even voice. It was pitched to neither alarm nor panic, a voice that was meant, and worked in her world, to let the other know that if assistance was needed, it was available.

He did not need to know that she was a healer, that she did not know where there was official medical help.

Of course, if he was not injured or ill, and he used an answer like that, he could be a troublemaker.

She missed her beat stick. She also desperately missed having a beat partner. Somehow she had a feeling Teela would find this whole situation amusing. Not... that Teela's amusement was ever comforting.

"Weakened by hunger. Unless you'd prefer me to walk. Then the ground could be my bed." He gave a weak chuckle. "Do excuse me, I need to find some things."

Taking a deep breath, he pushed from the building and began walking again, a sway to his steps. With his vision blurry, it grew hard to will one foot in front of the other. But somehow, he managed.

Hunger. She knew that feeling all too well. She sighed and moved forward, darting under one of his arms. "Lean on me. Do you know where to get food, or are we looking for some kind merchant?" she asked.

She wondered if he was playing her. He was certainly well dressed enough to not starve. He actually looked moneyed if she had to guess, but she wasn't sure. They didn't let her near the rich humans. If she wasn't a Lord of the High Court, she wouldn't be allowed near the rich of any race...

The Dragon hopped onto her head, and glared at him, warning him wordlessly not to hurt HIS human.

Erik ignored the dragon and waved-- Well, he would have waved until she got very close. With a sharp inhale, he tensed and tried to press himself against the nearest wall.

"No, I don't. I was going to find a merchant or an open market and see what I could find." he managed around some rapid breaths. As the panic subsided, he remained tense and moved his arm back to his side.

"Are you always so close?" he asked.

"I'm giving you someone to lean on," she said with a voice that made it clear that she did not think much of his intelligence. "So lean on me, we'll get you fed, then you'll explain why you're wearing a mask like a criminal."
operahouseghost: (out of the tunnels)

[personal profile] operahouseghost 2015-02-26 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
"My mask has nothing to do with being a criminal!" he snapped, eyes narrowing before he leaned, begrudgingly. "Just as your hair has nothing to do with your personality."

[personal profile] kaylinneya 2015-02-26 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't use it to hide my face," she growled. "If you're not a criminal, why the" she used a choice Leontine swear word that sounded like she was choking on a rat "would you have to hide your face?" she asked sharply.
operahouseghost: (out of the tunnels)

[personal profile] operahouseghost 2015-02-26 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
"My reasons are my own." he replied quickly. "Perhaps where you're from, criminals wear masks to make them easier to see, but not where I'm from Mine is used to protect.." he trailed off, inhaling sharply. "Enough about this. It doesn't matter."

[personal profile] kaylinneya 2015-02-26 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Protect what?" She tried to sound sympathetic. She stunk at politics, it came out sharp. She was good with kids. Hit 16 and she lost all tact.
operahouseghost: (out of the tunnels)

[personal profile] operahouseghost 2015-02-27 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Myself." he answered shortly. He was used to sharp tones, so it didn't phase him enough to stop talking. "This mask hides something that's earned more scorn than I could hold in a lifetime. I've no want for any more."
kaylinneya: (Tattoo profile)

[personal profile] kaylinneya 2015-02-27 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
"....Scorn? What is it?" she asked. She waved to her own face on her free side. "Trust me, no tattoo can be worse than mine," she said dismissively. All her human friends kept assuring her that the flower was pretty, even if it wasn't very much... her.

All her immortal friends? Wanted to either kill her, or Nightshade, or both over it.

[personal profile] operahouseghost 2015-02-27 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
"If it were as simple as a tattoo, I wouldn't need this!" he emphasized with a jab towards the mask. "No. Nothing so easy. Something I was cursed with from birth."
kaylinneya: (His name on her forehead)

[personal profile] kaylinneya 2015-02-27 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Cursed....?" she asked slowly, then shook her head. "If it's magic, it's not active at the moment," she said. Because to her, nothing hurt. And if he had a powerful spell active on him... she probably wouldn't have come this close to him.
operahouseghost: (out of the tunnels)

[personal profile] operahouseghost 2015-02-27 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"You believe in magic?" he responded to her question with an arch of his eyebrow, and a faint smile. "No, no magic, I'm afraid. Simply what I was given."
kaylinneya: (Close)

[personal profile] kaylinneya 2015-02-27 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
"If not magic, than what do you mean?" she asked, side stepping the question of magic carefully. She had a sinking sensation.
