[ His eyes widen in surprise as the young girl's voice registers at last and he turns to her, looking much like a deer caught in the headlights. A child? That hardly seems... ] What are you doing here?

[ He takes another look around before taking a step in her direction; he doesn't mean to cause fright - he looks more surprised than menacing, really. ] You don't look like an oyster.

[Alice is looking at him in much the same way. He knows her?] ..I've been here for a little over a year..

[She blinks] ...An oyster? I should hope not, since I'm- [The question on her mind pushes over the rest of that sentence] I'm terribly sorry, but have we met?

You're, what, a resident of Wonderland then? Hm. [ That wouldn't be as much of a stretch to assume; either way the Hatter raises an eyebrow at her. ] I should think we haven't. [ He tips his hat to her. ] Hatter, at your service. Or as much as possible until I figure out where Alice is.

[She shakes her head] No, of course I'm not a resident! But I have been there before.

[Wait. She stares at him, then to his hat.] ...Hatter? Oh my goodness! The hatter from the tea party? The same- Well, no.. you're so much taller, but!

..I'm right here! [She points to herself for emphasis.]

You've been to Wonderland? [ Past tense? Now there's something Hatter doesn't hear every day; Oysters don't exactly come and go as they please. Not that he finds the time to question her further; it seems like the girl recognizes him somehow. ]

The tea party? I don't quite recall attending any recent tea parties with anyone your age. [ Or any conventional tea parties, but she seems a little too young to be hearing about his business so soon. ]

I see you're right there, but I don't think that'll help me miss---
[ . . .

Wait a minute. ]

... You're telling me you're Alice?

Yes! Yes I have been.. Why-?

[She nods.] Yes! The tea party in the forest with the Doormouse and the March Hare- and the Doormouse kept falling asleep while he was telling a story.. So.. [Alice trails off, looking at him with a shake of her head.] This isn't making any sort of sense, I'm afraid.

[Alice drops into a curtsey.] I am! Alice Liddell, it's nice to meet you. ..Though confusing, I must admit.
