It's, ah... pretty far away. You probably never heard of it. [he wants to be truthful but he can't just tell a random stranger he's from the enchanted forest]

I doubt that. I know every city, town and most villages in the world. Except this place apparently.

[He looked around, confused.] Lay it on me.

It's... it's not really... [urghhh how does he do honesty and not tell the secret at the same time]

You mean you heard of Storybrooke? [yeah that's a good diversion]

Storybrooke? Seriously? That's not a real place as far as any map I've ever seen is concerned. And I've seen a lot.

[Beat.]

It's from a TV show. Gimme the real place, will ya?

You've seen Storybrooke on television? Like on the news?

[sleeplessteen]

The news? It's not a real place! There's this TV show my brother is crazy about called Once Upon a Time. He made me watch the first episode one night and man it was so boring.

Okay, the kid was kinda cute and the mayor character as the Evil Queen was pretty badass. But really? A magical curse taking people into our world? Nope. Don't buy it.

[okay just gonna stare at you. He knows that they all exist in books and movies, but a television show? One that follows their story exactly?]

Luckily for us, you weren't the one who needed to believe for the curse to break.

[sleeplessteen]

No I know. That Emma woman, right? She's the one that's gonna break it according to the kid.

[Thomas is going to stare back.] You really believe this, don't you?

I wouldn't be standing here if I didn't believe it.

Okay then, I'll humour you. Who are you meant to be? I don't remember seeing you in the pilot and I'd remember the name at least.

I show up later. [he hesitates, but if the guy knows this much then August might as well be honest about the rest] I was Pinocchio in the Enchanted Forest. Emma and I arrived in the World Without Magic together. That's why I'm grown up.

[wow it's kind of therapeutic to tell the truth]

[sleeplessteen]

Pinocchio. Right.

[He clears his throat, his curiosity getting the better of him.]

Okay so say I believe, which I don't, but for the sake of argument. How did you come with Emma? The tree thing could only carry one.

That was a lie. My father told the Blue Fairy to say that. It had enough magic for two, but he sent me first. He wanted to protect me from the curse...

[sleeplessteen]

I suppose better they lie than you right? Or who knows what you'd look like with a nose that big.

[Thomas laughed.] Okay. I've indulged you. Are you gonna tell the truth now, Pinocchio?

Yes, I am. But I prefer going by August, if you don't mind. I stopped being Pinocchio a long time ago.

[sleeplessteen]

[Thomas rolled his eyes. This guy was not going to give up!]

I'm sorry, I can't believe you are...who you say you are. Fictional people are just that. Fictional. They don't exist.

... Well. You wouldn't be the first to not believe me when I'm telling the truth. I won't take any offense.

[sleeplessteen]

[There was a pause as Thomas tried to figure this all out. eventually he spoke again.]

I believe in science over magic. Have you got any proof?

No, I don't. Sorry.
