They'd been hired guns, most of them; maybe he'd recognized the name and was playing dumb to try to avoid retribution? Alone, stranded, defenseless, and faced with one of the Joestars that had come to defeat his boss...that'd give him plenty of reason to be wary and feign ignorance, wouldn't it?
It's a long shot, but maybe it's worth trying, anyway. He's been trying to avoid escalating this, but given the subtle cues and tells in the way Giorno is acting, it's heading in that direction anyway, whether he likes it or not.]
