Merlin | Camelot (Starz TV-series)

There is something a little magical about how the world seems to be preparing to take a great breath just before the first light of the sun starts to seep over the horizon. Perhaps that is why Merlin tended to wake up at just that hour, regardless of when he'd fallen asleep. Magic held his soul in her iron fist, her name branded on his heart. No wonder it didn't take more than the spectre of her, the idea, to stir him to consciousness.

He swung his legs over the edge of his narrow and rather hard bed (that is how he preferred it) and got to his feet, rubbing a hand over his scalp and feeling the soft and very short hairs there tickle his palm. The floorboards creaked, a loud sound in the hush before dawn, and he winced a little. He went to the window, opening it to let cool air rush in and raise goosebumps on the skin of his bare chest. It cleared his head some but did nothing to make him feel more at ease, and so he gave up the notion of sleep for the moment and instead got dressed. That task taken care of he made his way to the front door and headed out on the street, the lights illuminating it a welcome difference from what he was used to even if part of him would always prefer the convenience of shadows. Better to learn secrets from people you could not see than to be seen by them and learn nothing at all. Intrigue is a game best played in darkness.

He set off at a brisk pace, not really going anywhere in particular but letting the act of movement take over his mind and drive from it all thought. He focused on the muscles in his legs, the tendons, the bones. He let himself be filled with wonder at the marvel of human anatomy. It was a wonder, really, that people did not fall apart more than they did. He often wondered why humanity seemed so insitent on stupidity, but when one considered the fact that all of their actions were dictated by a clump of grey matter located inside their skulls, it all made a lot more sense.

Merlin took a deep breath, and a tiny smile softened the features of his usually stern face as some of the tension left his system. A walk had been a good idea, it seemed.

And this was where they would forever be divided, even if she wasn't aware of it. His mind was set on the wonders, even his mortal worries were tied to a bigger cause, a larger number of people. Her ultimate goal might effect them all, but otherwise, she hardly paid attention to them.

She watched him, barely hidden in the shadows of some building or other. The only other person walking the streets, he wasn't hard to miss and she couldn't mistake him for another to save her life.

Even now, her mind was set on one thing, and while Merlin fought it, she didn't. Magic. Magic and the reason she was up at this hour. She hadn't slept tonight, instead, she had wandered the woods, tried and tried and tried again to perform the ritual that would normally grant her strength. Here, it did nothing. It exhausted her, and at some point, she must have wiped her nose on her sleeve absent-mindedly, because only now she noticed the blood on it.

It was high time for her to get home, clean herself up, and sleep. But as he approached...

She took a step forward, out of the shadows into the early morning light, absolutely impossible to miss, he was too close for that already.

"You seem to be in high spirits this morning."

Even if she looked like death warmed over, she somehow managed not to sound the part.

It was obvious to him what she had been doing, and because of it said high spirits made a hasty departure and the smile faded from his features.

He kept walking until there was only a couple of steps between them and looked her over with a critical gaze.

"You look as if you're standing in your grave."

Well, it had been nice while it had lasted.

Her expression changed from what was as close to a smile as she could muster to a something cold, unreadable. She knew she couldn't hide it, even if it wasn't for the blood on her sleeve and the cuts on her thumb, but that didn't stop her from refusing to let it show.

"Oh, you have always known how to talk to a lady," she replied, her voice as cold as her features and laced with sarcasm.
