A Question to the Players

 Right.

I want to know how the majority of you feel/go about uhm..... recognizing characters.

Where Toni comes from, werewolves, ghosts, vampires and magic are all things that are known to exist. 
Some are more common than others, but they exist.

Here lies the problem of 'Pop Culture'.

There were no references to anything in-comic, but sketches and Q&A's made it so that the characters of HiNaBN know music and current trends and so on.
Example: One character was asked about Twilight, one was asked about Pokemon.

She would not know anything beyond 2011, if anything at all.

So I'd like a general opinion on things before I get into it all.
I don't want to take the fun out of something for someone, you know?

Well... Stiles knows about Supernatural, Doctor Who and the like? And for instance, it shouldn't be unusual for someone to recognize Tinker Bell or Alice Liddell.
I'm not sure fourth-walling is what you're asking about, but you should be fine as long as you clear it with the mun first, as some people aren't cool with breaking the 4th wall, and don't spoil the characters!

Zeheart made his debut in 2012, so he wouldn't apply in this specific circumstance. Generally, I prefer to handle fourth-walling on a case-by-case basis.

My suggestion would be to set up a permissions post and ask players to list their preferences there. In general, it's seen as polite to ask a player before fourth-walling.

Someone already mentioned me up there, ehehehe. Stiles is a huge pop culture nerd so there are a few things that I have him know!! But I usually check with the muns if I can. I think just as long as it makes sense for your character to know about it and if the mun's okay with it, then it can be hilarious! ♥ I've seriously got some of my best CR through fourthwalling~
