Merlin | Camelot (Starz TV-series)

There is something a little magical about how the world seems to be preparing to take a great breath just before the first light of the sun starts to seep over the horizon. Perhaps that is why Merlin tended to wake up at just that hour, regardless of when he'd fallen asleep. Magic held his soul in her iron fist, her name branded on his heart. No wonder it didn't take more than the spectre of her, the idea, to stir him to consciousness.

He swung his legs over the edge of his narrow and rather hard bed (that is how he preferred it) and got to his feet, rubbing a hand over his scalp and feeling the soft and very short hairs there tickle his palm. The floorboards creaked, a loud sound in the hush before dawn, and he winced a little. He went to the window, opening it to let cool air rush in and raise goosebumps on the skin of his bare chest. It cleared his head some but did nothing to make him feel more at ease, and so he gave up the notion of sleep for the moment and instead got dressed. That task taken care of he made his way to the front door and headed out on the street, the lights illuminating it a welcome difference from what he was used to even if part of him would always prefer the convenience of shadows. Better to learn secrets from people you could not see than to be seen by them and learn nothing at all. Intrigue is a game best played in darkness.

He set off at a brisk pace, not really going anywhere in particular but letting the act of movement take over his mind and drive from it all thought. He focused on the muscles in his legs, the tendons, the bones. He let himself be filled with wonder at the marvel of human anatomy. It was a wonder, really, that people did not fall apart more than they did. He often wondered why humanity seemed so insitent on stupidity, but when one considered the fact that all of their actions were dictated by a clump of grey matter located inside their skulls, it all made a lot more sense.

Merlin took a deep breath, and a tiny smile softened the features of his usually stern face as some of the tension left his system. A walk had been a good idea, it seemed.
