[It was uncomfortable to put into words, to actually describe himself from his own perspective, not least because it felt like gearing up for a fight -- he knew he was going to get contradicted.]

I'm saying I'm not a nice guy. Good in a fight, sure, and somebody's gotta look after Aki, but whatever you think you're looking for, I shouldn't be it.

[She stabs a piece of cake, circling it around playfully, dragging it through the fruit syrup embellishing the plate it rested on.]

I wasn't necessarily looking for anything in particular...[She brings the piece of cake to her mouth, holding it in front of her to pause before biting down.]...and I never thought you were a 'nice guy.'

[She hooks her foot behind his ankle, biting down on the piece of cake without breaking eye-contact.]

He hadn't meant to ask that, and she hadn't expected him to. As a result, her answer required a bit of thought.]
