Ignore the conflicting feelings about meeting your genetic mother from another universe again, ignore the anxiety over speaking to her for more than five minutes before she's gone again, ignore how much her saying her own name makes you miss your own daughter.

The confusion is evident in her entire expression, from knit brows to puzzled fuchsia eyes, right down to trembling lips, unsure of how to even respond to her.

She looked just like Rose. Her Rose. Her daughter. But... she's so much... older. This has to be the same phenomenon as young Dirk, didn't it? Only in reverse. So that meant...]

Rose--? [Oh fuck, oh fuck no. No, no no. She knows how this is supposed to work, now.

This woman is supposed to be her mother, isn't she? But... she's her daughter. She's so clearly her Rose, just... an adult. But with all that insane ectobiology nonsense that made this woman her daughter and mother, and--]

I-- I need a drink. That's it. I just. I need a drink.

[She exhales a shuddering sigh, lifting a hand to her face and rubbing at her temples.]

I don't-- I don't think I was ever prepared to handle this meeting, please forgive me.

[I need a drink. Those words cause such a violent, angry reaction in her mind it almost scares her. It stirs up unpleasant memories. She doesn't let it show on her face, keeping her expression calm. The slight tremble in her voice betrays her.]

It's-it's fine. I understand the sentiment completely. I wouldn't say no to one myself, all things considered.

[And a cigarette. Hell, a whole pack of cigarettes. She hasn't smoked since early November but damn she feels like she needs it.]

Well, maybe we could do that, then. Get together and have a drink? [The tremble to her voice is more the nervous laughter behind it. She really, honest to god can not believe she's seeing all this right now. It's... it's mind-boggling, and way more emotional than it even SORT OF has any right to be.]

[You'd think hearing how nervous she is would make Rose feel better about her own anxieties. Nope. Not even close.]

There's a bar in the center of the city. The Black Stallion. We could go there.

I've been invited by a one Dave Strider to Casa Stri-Lal. Perhaps I can just come to you?

Unless you'd like to make this a one-on-one sort of thing. [She smiles and it's truly sincere, even if she does still seem pretty anxious about it.] Whichever is good for you.

[Of course he automatically invited her without consulting his wife. Of course. She'll have to have a talk with him about that later.]

How kind of him. [She doesn't sound displeased. More unsure than anything.] To be honest I'd prefer for us to meet one-on-one. Besides, there's not a lot of liquor in the house.

Or perhaps... you two should do that.

I can find the bar, I think. So I'll meet you there?

That's...fine. Tell him to meet us there. I know he won't object to having a drink with us.

We might as well just bring our Striders with us.

I'm fairly certain mine is trying to find me right now. If I shake him to tell him I'm going to have drinks with my mom-child he'll probably try to give me puppy eyes and I will tell him "No," and then five minutes later he'll conveniently show up with Dave in tow, claiming coincidence.

Because that's simply how Dirk Strider works.

So, we might as well just avoid that entire debacle and save our one-on-one for later. [SIGHS. MEN. Honestly.]

[Oh no, she's smiling a little now. Because that's exactly how Striders of all flavors are.]

And Dave would play right along with him because that's simply how Dave Strider works.

Saving our one-on-one might be a better course of action with our personal Striders clinging to our skirts.
