[It isn't that the voice is unfamiliar or that it takes him long to place it. It doesn't. He hears it regularly in his dreams and more often yet in his nightmares.

That only makes it worse.

He spends quite a while staring at the watch as if it were something vile and traitorous - which it has become - and then spends some more time trying to remember how to make his hands obey him.
