G'day, Ruby City! It's time for a meme for both testdrivers and denizens.

Been itching to test out some CR but haven't had the posts to do it? Thinking of apping a character but not sure they'll fit in the city walls?

Just walked in: You intended to get here, and you made your way in; but now someone's caught your eye and you'd like to have a chat.

I hope, [She explains.] To see him again-- to be the sister he deserves would be a wonder. I should apologize to him, for him having to see me pass. For not being there for him as much as I should have. He did not live with us, but he came and went as he pleased.

Your brother may join us yet, too.

See? It might be a marvel yet, this place. A second chance to start over! With your family, even, and to make better choices. But wait a moment...

[What the hell, she darts away for a moment to grab the entire bottle of whiskey. When she returns, she pours them both another glass.]

We should at least get to drink to the deceased. As for my brother, though? I'd rather he stay where he is. He's happy and relatively safe where he is. This is a cage, he doesn't deserve to have more of his life stolen from him.

No, not with my family. Just Gavroche. [She did not miss her mother or her father or even her sister. Her family had no love for her, not anymore. They were all consumed with greed. Though, she had to wonder what would have happened, when they found her body, and Gavroche's. Would they mourn? Would anybody?

No. No they would not.

She grabs the glass of whiskey as though she's dying of thirst.] Then I hope he stays wherever he is, too. A drink to the deceased. [She raises her glass.]

I can drink to that. To the deceased!

[Leah raises her glass as well and clinks it with Éponine's.

She takes note of her friend excluding her family from the list of people she wants to see again, yet decides after a moment not to inquire. They've told another a lot for a first meeting, she wouldn't be surprised if it's more than they ever shared with a stranger. Better not to be pushing her luck.]

And let's drink to the living as well. To all those we left behind...

[At the clink, she takes a deep drink before already moving to pour herself more whiskey. It's true, she tends not to share this sort of thing with people. Then again, she also was the sort to completely open up for no reason at all. Middle ground was not something that she often experienced.]

To the living, then. [She fills up Leah's glass as well.] To your brother, to my Marius, perhaps even your Sam, too.

[Leah thinks about that with a grimace, then chuckles darkly.] Might as well... To Sam and Emily, may they be forever happy... far, far away from me! But now we have to drink to that girl your man is drooling about, too. [She flashes Eponine a toothy grin.] Fair's fair... and either way, it'll get us another glass of whiskey.

[She pours them both another tall glass.] Fine. To Cosette. Our floors were never cleaner than when she was around, the water always fresh. And to the woolen petticoat her mother bought for her! It kept me warm all winter long. [She chuckles darkly and slams the whole glass back before all but throwing it on the table.]

[Leah raises both eyebrows, a bit befuddled by so much old resentment.] ...and here I thought you wouldn't have held a grudge against the girl until your man lost his wits around her.

I've known her since I was three, Leah. [She says darkly.] She meant nothing to me. And now she's his everything! [More whiskey.]

I've known Emily all my life, too. She's my cousin. Did I tell you yet that she's my cousin? [It's all becoming a bit fuzzy.] She was my best friend, too. Whenever she visited us during school vacations we would go fishing together with... Dad. [Well, now if that isn't a sobering memory. The loss that pains her even more than losing Sam's love and Emily's friendship. Leah's face turns expressionless and she quickly downs another glass of whiskey.]

[Eponine leans forward, pouring them each another glass.] Are things difficult with your father, too, mademoiselle Leah?

At least you had happy memories with her. Cosette was nothing. She was taken from us and that was the last time I remember being truly happy. Until Marius.

No, they aren't difficult. [She snatches up the glass, but doesn't drink, merely clings to it.] He's dead. I killed him.

[How do you respond to that? Simple: with another drink.] I often wish mine was dead. How lucky you are.

Don't you dare! [Still clinging to that glass if it were her lifeline, but it's showing cracks now.] There's nothing lucky about it. Don't talk about things you know nothing about.

[the glass is cracking. Eponine looks at it curiously, more interested in that then Leah's anger.] Non! I do mean it! He's a terrible man, who drove me to this. [She indicates herself.] He hurt me in ways you cannot imagine. I was nothing to him but a way to get money. Because of him we starved. It would be better if he were dead.

But my father wasn't like that! He was the best... [Leah's voice cracks, but she's angry and determined and desperate to make Eponine understand.] ...the best man I've ever known. He was the best father Seth and I could have asked for. He was a great father and husband. He taught me how to fish and to shoot and after that time I was fourteen when some guy had tried to sell me meth he taught me how to break a man's nose. And then... [She angrily wipes at the tears burning in her eyes. She can't let them fall, not where someone can see it. Leah stands up abruptly.]/small> And then I got him killed. Thanks, but I guess I'm done for tonight.

Leah! [Eponine reaches out and grabs her arm.] Then you are a lucky woman. My father was like that to me, once. But Cosette was taken and we lost everything we had and he turned cold and sour. You are lucky it never came to that, and to have a father as good as gold in your life. I am sorry that happened to you. To him. You do not deserve it.

[It takes all she has not to tear her arm out of Eponine's grasp or simply give in to the wolf ready to burst out, but she resists with all her strength. She won't repeat Sam's mistake, she refuses to give Eponine scars to match Emily's for an unknowingly callous remark about the lost father.

Her breathing keeps coming fast and heavy as she tries to focus on Eponine's words. When her friend is done she nods sharply.]</small I am. lucky. You're sorry. I believe you. But I have to...

Go. [She said, almost wordlessly, letting go of Leah's hand. She recognized the need to flee, and would be stupid to keep Leah near when she so clearly needed to leave. She would find her again, she had no doubt.]

Go.

[She gave her a grateful, though tight smile, and a curt nod. Then Leah all but dashed from the bar. She needed to get to the forest now and run on four paws, simply run until everything else had been drowned out by the thrill of her own speed.]
