[yep, that's waver, alright.] Waver! [he grins back and stands to clap him on the shoulder.] How is anyone meant to recognize you? I can hardly believe--look at you! [iskandar feels so stupidly proud at this moment excuse him]

[That Waver doesn't fall over is a testament to his strength. Kind of. He still wobbles, and grins up at Rider. Less up than before though, which is weird.]

I'm hurt that after twenty years it took me calling you an idiot for it to register that its me!

[It is an oddly sobering reminder, although he's not about to do something ridiculous like hug the great big walking capslocks button personified in the middle of the library. Nope.] What's the last thing you recall? Time doesn't work properly here.

Still, [gosh he isn't going to cry, but he does look rather misty-eyed.] twenty years? I would say that was impossible if you weren't living proof. What have you done with yourself since then? [iskandar adds with a cheeky grin,] Except for grow, that is.

[No he can't, he is still the worst with emotions. Even if the great big lug of a king is misting up himself. That's not going to impact him at all. He grins, in spite of himself, and shrugs.]

Took Kayneth's old title, became a professor back at Clock Tower, and took the Holy Grail apart. Nothing much.

The man is likely rolling in his grave with envy that you're doing more with his title than he did. You have more than earned your place. But taking the Grail apart, [his brows knit together in curiosity,] how is that possible?

[He's not used to speaking about this, but this is Alexander. He more than anyone has the right to know.]

The fourth war set some of Fuyuki on fire, and the destruction was awesome in the very original sense of that word. Ten years later, the fifth holy grail war began - fifty years sooner than it should have. The head of the Tohsaka family, Rin, participated in that war, and later became my student at Clock Tower. When it appeared that the grail would be returning again, and that the Mage Association was going to allow it, we decided to see that there wouldn't be another war, and managed to prevent it through an incredible amount of magic on her end, and a few smart moves on mine.

[Like he'd ever have Rin's firepower as a mage, really.] The fighting ended up being as bad as any grail war. I had allies in my former students, who assisted us, and we managed with a lot of luck. We saw the task through to the end, and, well. There you go, no more grail.

[iskandar rubs his beard, attempting to take in everything waver's said. the fourth grail war breeding two more--each worse than the last--didn't surprise him. the way of the world dictated that violence beget violence. every warrior hoped their legion would be the last to make the harrowing march to the front, but.... regardless what had been lost, one unknown aspect worried him more.] Fuyuki did not even have adequate time to recover from Caster or the fires you mentioned, not to mention the damage from the War itself. You and Tohsaka did what had to be done. For that I am proud. But what had incredible magical power to tamper with the Grail's timing?

--We never figured it out. [He laughs thinly.] We figured, based on what written accounts Rin could find in Fuyuki, that something went wrong during the third war, but the what of it was always just out of reach. We could've sat and poked at it when we were destroying it, but there wasn't any time to do so.

Ah, that is understandable. Perhaps the solution will be found in time. However, as I said before, [he places a hand on waver's shoulder,] you two undertook a task that needed to be done before even more were killed. Look not upon your perceived failures, but your accomplishments. You prevented the further destruction of Fuyuki and saved the lives of those who be caught in the middle of the premature Grail War. You have done well, Waver Velvet. Ha, or should I say Lord El-Melloi II?

[There's been plenty of well dones said to Waver in the past twenty years. Graduations, titles, destroying grails. None have been more satisfying than this, and he tries to downplay the all too satisfied smile on his face.]

Waver. You really don't even have to ask - the title's pointless here, as there's no association authority to back it up.

A title is worth everything even if there is no power behind it. Regardless, I'm more comfortable with Waver.

I think it goes back to when they were a colony of England and decided they didn't want a monarchy, and set up a complicated republic with government agencies to hold each other in check, and four years ensures that no man holds onto power for too long.
