Game Mechanic Announcement

Good Day, ladies, gents, and all others!

It's finally time to reveal the mechanic we are developing for the city. We have been sitting on this excitedly for months, and we are very happy to bring it to you!

While there are still a few more weeks before this mechanic is implemented and before our fair city learns of these developments in game, we would like to make you aware of the new mechanic so that any confusion can be cleared up prior to its institution.

As you may or may not have guessed, the city is preparing for something of a War; a game of chess between the Virtues and Vices. However, this is not an effort that either side has any control over. Rather, they are being pit against each other in a game as a result of Ikaros's will. This War will be called the Rumor War-- and it's also what we're calling the mechanic.

Every few events, there will be a special Story Event. Now, don't let the name mislead you; these events are not a part of one big story. Rather, as some citizens have discovered, these events are a part of the stories that other characters bring to the pot. You've seen Story Events before, the Mouse King being the most recent. However, something new is going to happen with each story event.

At the beginning of every Story Event, a scoreboard will be visible in the pedestal of the obelisk. This scoreboard serves to show a Battle. For each Story Event that occurs, a Vice will be pitted against a Virtue. (Though, sometimes, this may shift; sometimes two will go against one, or two against two, or a vice against a vice, and the like.) Obviously, it would be boring if they fought directly, right? That's why Ikaros has developed a system.

Every time there is a Story Event, Ikaros creates a second layer to the city. This city simulation can suffer any amount of damage during an event and be reset at the end of it. He also adds a "Win" option and a "Lose" option to each event, though the requirements of those options may not be known ICly. Every event will have at least two different outcomes. One outcome will benefit the virtue, and the other will benefit the vice.

This means that every player who participates in the Story Events is responsible for contributing to one outcome or another, and will affect the outcome of Ikaros's Story Game.

But what, exactly, does it mean for the city, when a Virtue or Vice wins? It's simple; the more power a Virtue or Vice has, the more the city grows to resemble it. (Once the simulation ends, after all, the citizens will return to the Main City to find that their city has changed.) Say, for instance, Chastity holds the most power; should she, the city will resemble a more responsible, honest city. The streets will remain well lit and more safe (complete with more street lights), the availability of produce in the city will be more health-conscious, the buildings will more accurately display their safety level and become more simple in design, and items lending themselves to a safe and honest working environment will appear in the shops. Furthermore, Ikaros will begin to look more and more like Chassie. The over-all aura of the city will be one that encourages honest and safe behaviour.

What does it mean, then, if someone like Greed should hold the most power? Well, the city will seem to teem for a little while with material goods and flattering housing; however, after a while, the 'good quality' items will become rarer and more prized, and the city's aura will be one that craves to be sated by materials. Ikaros will begin to look and act more like Callie.

Don't worry, there will be a visual scoreboard for you all to see who is holding the most power, and we'll be sure to make it apparent who has won each Story Event. However, there are other ways to increase the power a virtue or vice holds over the city; completing quests, speaking with them, and acting with similar behaviour is noticed and lends a small portion of power to their influence.

Your involvement as a player with this city will now directly shape the atmosphere, climate, and over-all appearance of the setting. We hope you are excited for this new mechanic to be used and for the first Story Event of the year to come in to play.

Remember, the first Story Event will be the Despair Disease. Because this event will be the first one using the new Rumor War Mechanic, we'll be letting the details out for plotting just a little bit early to give you more time.

Please use this post to ask any questions you may have!

Just to be sure, since these events take place in a second layer of the city that doesn't do anything permanent, are we allowed to cause massive damage to it or is it subject to the usual 'get OOC permission and expect IC punishment' rule?
superstylishsquid: (Huh?)

Huh...so it sounds like we should double check before causing any damage at all, just to make sure it's even possible.
