It wasn't a fluke that I ended up completely tongue-tied the first time we met. In some ways you're not just "family", you're THE family. You're where it all began, and for a long time that's all you were - just a name, a distant memory, a justification passed along by someone else. As hard as it's been for you, being here, I'm still glad that you came. I'm glad I've had the chance to know you as a real person, too.

You'd hate it if I did. I know that. But it wouldn't stop me, because...well, who knows. Maybe that's just one of those things I inherited from you, huh.

Like I said - that's important, Grandpa. Thanks...for understanding. It meant a lot more than you might ever know, and a lot more than I really realized until it was already happening.

I don't think it's possible to NOT respect you. You're just that kind of person. You can literally walk on water, for fuck's sake.

It's so weird to me when you act like...an average guy. Mostly because it reminds me that you are one. Like I said, most everything I always heard about you was this really idealized, distant-past kind of storytelling. The stories left out the parts where you get really excited about random shit and sometimes hit your head on the doorframe.

Whichever one you need, of the two, I'm good for it. Don't fight alone anymore, and maybe it'll help me remember that I don't have to fight alone anymore, either.

I want to see all of the people I know in you. I want to hear Jiji's laugh and my mom's kindness and things about the relatives I don't know anything about, I want to witness all of those things and see that they started with you.

I would lie to you, if it meant trying to protect you. I know that would hurt you, but I'd do it if I thought I had to. I hope I don't end up having to.
