[JUNE] Test Drive

Thinking of apping a character but not sure they'll fit in the city walls?

Have no fear, a meme for you is here.

Directions:
  • Use an RNG to choose a location and prompt, or wait for someone else to tag.

  • Post with your character with their name and canon on top!

  • If you'd like, leave contact info for people to get in contact for plotting and other such shenans.

  • Tag around! Make friends. Don't be afraid to chat OOC while tagging.

Locations

1.TRAIN STATION - The place where everyone gets dumped off at. Your first view of Ruby City, complete with informational posters telling you all about where you've ended up.
2. THE BEACH - Lovely year-round, though in the winter months, you're probably not likely to dip your toes in.
3. THE BLACK STALLION - A rather quaint bar. Supposedly, the burgers are great, but you don't see anyone immediately who's willing to serve you. Maybe you're meant to get it yourself.
4. THE OBELISK - The tall monolith in the center of the city marks the gathering place of many events, though right now it seems to be cold and dark.
5. THE CLOCKTOWER - Offering an impressive view of the city, several residents come here to clear their heads, if they don't mind braving the narrow staircase.
6. THE COFFEE JOINT - the front windows are warm and welcoming, and it seems there's always someone friendly enough to fix you a cup when you wander through.
7. THE CATACOMBS - Intrepid, aren't you? Those weird holes may beg exploring, but go too deep and you're going to be in a lot of trouble, considering the viciousness of the creatures held within.
8. THE CITY STREETS - All told, Ruby City is a lovely place, once you get past the fact that several of the buildings look derelict and on the verge of falling down. There's no harm in doing a little sightseeing.
9. THE PARK - You thought it'd be a lovely stroll, but the park is anything but friendly, if those approaching wolf-like creatures are any indication.
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like what we've come up with? Feel like picking your own place? There's a whole host of lovely locations to choose from in the City.

Scenarios

1. NEW ARRIVAL - Step off that train, walk down the street. People usually latch on to newcomers to try and help them out. Even if you look shy, the other residents probably won't be!
2. WATCH TALK - Feeling lost? Disoriented? Don't worry, everyone feels that way on their first day. Fortunately - if the signs at the station are to believed - the watch in your pocket can be used to talk to whoever else might be here.
3. BAD WEATHER - Aw, man. Whether it's snow, or rain, or just plain cold, today was definitely the wrong day to get dumped off in a City in the middle of nowhere.
4. A RUN-IN - Maybe you weren't watching. Maybe they weren't. Either way, you just bumped into someone. Perhaps apologies are in order?
5. HELP, IT HURTS - Clumsy, aren't you? Perhaps wherever the train brought you from wasn't so friendly, or you just tripped and twisted your ankle. Either way, you're in a bit of pain. Hopefully someone will notice your booboos and help patch you up.
6. HUNGRY - It isn't very obvious sometimes that restaurants are what they are, especially in a place like Ruby City. Where can a person go to get a bite to eat around here?
7. MISTAKEN IDENTITY - Hey, there's someone you know! --Or maybe not.
8. BEING FOLLOWED - Maybe you're just being paranoid, or maybe you've got a reason to be afraid. Whatever it is, it feels like there's eyes on you...
9. EVENTS - Feel free to look through our event tag!
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like any of these ideas? Feel free to come up with your own!

Apologies for the delay!

"Mh. I don't know if you should thank me." He wasn't sure if the young lady before him was someone with considerable power – she didn't exude confidence or slyness or cynicism or madness, but he had a feeling that she could do things he would simply be unable to achieve.

"The downside of coming here is that nobody who's come by train actually wants to be here. Yes, it seems like a nice place at first, but it's really not, sadly." The way his faint smile faded would have told her as much.

What delay? XD No problems.

"Well that makes sense if there are monsters, and I kind of figured it out looking around. It looks like the city has seen a lot better times. So just how many people are there, that have been brought here?"

If they were all on a train then there had to be a reason right?

"And of course I should thank you, you were nice enough to introduce yourself and tell me where I was."

Even if there were posters that had given her a little more information than just the name.

"Oh, there's a bit more I'd like to say," Julian pointed out. He paused half a moment before continuing.

"There's about two score other people presently here who've stepped off that train, from what I know. Some have been here a few weeks, others a few months and still others years. I've seen some who've only come and gone within a few months and noticed people who've left only after years. Time works…differently on this island, so people have been able to go back to their lives for years and come back to just a week passing here."

The young man considered the obelisk briefly, still pulsing with its faint light. He then refocused his gaze on her as he spoke further: "There are seven – technically eight – beings in charge of this city and the island on which it resides. Collectively, they're called the Overseers. They are not human, despite appearances, and are quite powerful. The city itself undergoes drastic changes at the drop of a hat. There was a week not too long ago where everyone suddenly became fairy tale creatures – there were werewolves, the Baba Yaga, a rather serpentine dragon, not-so-little red riding hood… Another week, more recent, where half the residents were displaced to the far side of the island, and the city was set upon by a fog that brought about indistinct yet painfully loud voices you couldn't block out and sent cracks through every building.

"If there's anything else you want to know, I can tell you about it. I've only been here a few months, but I've read some records on the history of this place and can at least give you a rough idea of whatever." He surprised himself, managing to keep his gaze on the person before him. It might have been because of that indiscernible quality to her abilities.

"Baba yaga, fairy tales, constantly changing. It really does sound like a nightmare to keep up with."

Really, what other kind of place would be able to change so drastically so often besides someones dreamscape. And if there were some of the people that were more powerful, perhaps that was the person whose it was and they were just having a conflict within themselves. Granted there was no way for Hokuto to verify that, and even so she didn't know why there would be so many people.

"It sounds pretty confusing. But you said that people leave, has anyone seen when they left or how? The train doesn't seem like it's an option and I haven't seen any cars or anything around."

Taking a half step back she leaned against the edge of a bench, a little curious about who this guy was too. After all he had been the first one that she had seen and there was something about the way he kept his eyes on her that made her curious.

"Where are you from?"
arken7: a believer (gazing)

Ah, pardon that HTML fail above.

[personal profile] arken7 2016-06-11 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
"I was born in Quasi on Terra. But that's not what you'd be interested in, I don't think. What you'd be interested in is the year I was dragged here from – 2946. The thirtieth century."

He paused a moment before addressing her other points. "No. No-one has seen another person leave – that's how it works. They just disappear from here one night. Sometimes they come back a few days later, having experienced a few years of their life back where they came from. The technological progression of this city is a strange mix, so there's no vehicles aside from the train and the a few unpowered boats, but there's internal plumbing and electricity. The forge doesn't have a lathe, though somebody could probably build one if given the time and desire to do so."

"Regarding the events – the city has some consistency to the way things work. There's never any warning, the events never last more than a week and there's at least one of note in a month. Also, there's a high chance that the event will try to make you believe that nothing's wrong – it always happens for the more drastic events."

No problem, happens to us all.

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-06-11 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"So there are people from different times and worlds. That sounds like a pretty confusing thing to deal with. Is there ever a problem understanding someone, because I've never heard of Quasi but you seem to speak Japanese pretty well."

At the mention of events happening each month, she leans back a little more. She really didn't like the way that any of this sounded, but there wasn't much that she could do now. Other than try to help the other people that were here.

"A week each month sounds like a lot, what goes on the rest of the time though?"
arken7: all the words inside my head (small smile)

Ooh my. Eleven days. Sorry 'bout forgetting this thing.

[personal profile] arken7 2016-06-23 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nothing, really," he admits. "People do their best to try and enjoy themselves, I guess."

At her mention of languages, Julian has to smile a little.

"Ah, that is one of the few nice things about this place that isn't obvious from the start – universal translation. While I can speak the odd word of Japanese back where I come from, I'd be much better with French. Presently, this conversation is being translated to English for myself; my home tongue, that is."

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-06-27 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"What?!? Really? That's amazing, how much easier it would be to travel or talk about things if everyone just spoke the same language. And you'd never have to study a foreign language in school, or all kind of difficult and strange words."

Really the more she heard, the more amazing this city became, even if there were a few downsides like monsters and strange occurrences. Those were things that could be dealt with and problems that could be solved.
arken7: all the words inside my head (half-smile)

[personal profile] arken7 2016-06-29 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nah, it's not that fancy. There's only about fifty of us here, including the Overseers – but not the originals, as I call them." Julian paused as he considered how to explain the 'originals'. "They're the ones maintaining the place – the library ghosts, the trash imps. Not everyone notices them, but they're there."

After a brief moment, he half-smiled and said, "You know, this place is called a city, but it's not actually got a city's population. I'd say it's a town's size, if you're being generous."

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-07-01 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Wow, there are shops having sales that have more people than that. No wonder why I didn't run into anyone else until now, there's so much room and not that many people."

Though the mentions of ghosts and imps does get her attention a little as she leans a little more and seems to study what he was saying a little more and well as glance around the square some.

"I guess I'm lucky that I ran into someone nice like you first."
arken7: but they never did, ever lived (aside)

[personal profile] arken7 2016-07-03 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He nodded. "Yeah. It's a small place here. Where I'm from, the area of land this settlement sits on could fit quite a few people, probably near a quarter million with enough verticality to the construction."

At the comment on running into someone like him, he shakes his head and glances away. "Ah, I'm not that nice. And the trash imps are pretty helpful, if you don't think you'd like the ghosts. They generally pay us no mind, anyway."

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-07-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're nice enough to have helped me and told me a little about this place. And I think it might be good to talk to the ghosts, it's what Subaru would do just to make sure that they're not suffering and can't move on."

Spirits weren't supposed to hang around forever, so if they were here there had to be a reason and finding out what it was might be a kind of clue as to what was going on.

"Though it'd be handy to know just when the imps come around to clean up too so I know when to put the garbage out."
arken7: all the words inside my head (other focus)

[personal profile] arken7 2016-07-07 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mmh. True," he conceded. "I don't really know how to talk to ghosts – aside from just as quiet people – so, if you think you're able to do something for them, go right ahead. I doubt anyone's going to stop you."

Julian smiled at her comment. "They come at odd hours and random times. Just leave it in a bin and they'll do away with it before the end the week, usually."

He stepped a few paces in a circle to keep the blood flowing through his legs.

"Do you want a bit of a tour of the place, or are you fine to figure things out as you go? There's a decent map at the police station, if you want to look at one."

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-07-08 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course I can. The Sumeragi have been the top Onmyōji for generations, in fact my twin brother Subaru is the thirteenth head of the family and one of the most powerful Onmyōji in Japan. I might be as good as he is, but I'm not useless."

At the offer of a tour though, Hokuto followed the few steps he had taken and wrapper her arms around his.

"A tour would be great! It'd take me forever to find my way around on my own, and I'd probably starve and would know any of the places to get decent food or clothes or supplies. There's only so much that a map can tell you, but someone who has been around knows all the best places."
arken7: your spirit up above (gasping)

[personal profile] arken7 2016-07-09 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll take your word for it – though I'm not sure what Onmyōji actually translates to. I've just been given the term itself and I've not enough knowledge of Japanese to know what it could be." He figured it had something to do with ghosts and other supernatural beings, but couldn't be certain.

His eyes widened considerably at the sudden contact, but he was able to calm himself before he instinctively made to break from her grasp or throw her.

After a moment, he managed to say, "…Okay. Do you have a specific place in mind, or would you rather me just talk about whatever comes to mind first?"

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-07-09 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then I can tell you more about it while you tell me about the city. You can just show me around the places that you like to go and know about."

She didn't really acknowledge the change in expression if she noticed it all. Instead she maintained her smile while she spun around in front and tugged him forward a little.

"But don't think for a second this a date or anything. I don't know enough about you to consider something like that."
arken7: in the cloud (glancing)

[personal profile] arken7 2016-07-10 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
"No, no – I didn't even think of the possibility!" he exclaimed honestly – though it didn't exactly sound like it. For a generally mature nineteen-year-old, he could certainly act younger than he was at times.

After a moment, he composed himself and said, "Well, sure. That works for me; I'll start with the south and west of the City, since it's where I spend a lot of time – the house I've commandeered and the Training School are over there, along with the gym and the police station."

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-07-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"The house you commandeered? So you're part of the police or military for the city? Seems like there wouldn't really be a need for one if there aren't that many people here. Everyone should just be able to work together."

Though there were probably a few bad seeds and people that would cause trouble, there always were.
arken7: all the words inside my head (half-smile)

[personal profile] arken7 2016-07-11 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, 'commandeered' is just the word I use. Nobody was living in it when I stepped in, so I took it to be my own. I didn't buy it, nor have I done anything notable to it – I don't really own it. It's just the house I live in."

He was quietly glad that she hadn't commented on his earlier fluster.

"So, the gymnasium's just there, on that corner. The police station is that building ahead of us. There's a baron who's ended up here that uses it for whatever purposes, though his house is elsewhere."

[personal profile] ex_actuates396 2016-07-13 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"So you're just a squatter. Or are people allowed to just claim whatever house they want since there's so many empty places? Wait how is there a police station if there's only like fifty people here, how many police are there?"

Really what kind of laws could they have in a place like this.
arken7: all the words inside my head (glance)

[personal profile] arken7 2016-07-13 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
"The police station just sits there. It's not actually housing a police force, just the one man's workshop or lab or whatever it is," Julian explained. "Though, said one man wanted to set up a patrol force and some basic laws earlier. Didn't get far, though it was a decent idea."

Her use of the term squatter brings a slight frown to his face. "It's the latter – people can claim whatever house or apartment they want because this city could fit twice the number of people present and still have room."

They pass the police station and he points out the features beyond it. "My house is that one - the one with darker bricks and a pale door. The Spiral Training School is that repurposed warehouse opposite. It's presently used for combat training and practice mostly, though it has rooms for more theoretical studies as well."
