[JULY] Test Drive

Thinking of apping a character but not sure they'll fit in the city walls?
Have no fear, a meme for you is here.
Directions:
- Use an RNG to choose a location and prompt, or wait for someone else to tag.
- Post with your character with their name and canon on top!
- If you'd like, leave contact info for people to get in contact for plotting and other such shenans.
- Tag around! Make friends. Don't be afraid to chat OOC while tagging.
Locations
1.TRAIN STATION - The place where everyone gets dumped off at. Your first view of Ruby City, complete with informational posters telling you all about where you've ended up.
2. THE BEACH - Lovely year-round, though in the winter months, you're probably not likely to dip your toes in.
3. THE BLACK STALLION - A rather quaint bar. Supposedly, the burgers are great, but you don't see anyone immediately who's willing to serve you. Maybe you're meant to get it yourself.
4. THE OBELISK - The tall monolith in the center of the city marks the gathering place of many events, though right now it seems to be cold and dark.
5. THE CLOCKTOWER - Offering an impressive view of the city, several residents come here to clear their heads, if they don't mind braving the narrow staircase.
6. THE COFFEE JOINT - the front windows are warm and welcoming, and it seems there's always someone friendly enough to fix you a cup when you wander through.
7. THE CATACOMBS - Intrepid, aren't you? Those weird holes may beg exploring, but go too deep and you're going to be in a lot of trouble, considering the viciousness of the creatures held within.
8. THE CITY STREETS - All told, Ruby City is a lovely place, once you get past the fact that several of the buildings look derelict and on the verge of falling down. There's no harm in doing a little sightseeing.
9. THE PARK - You thought it'd be a lovely stroll, but the park is anything but friendly, if those approaching wolf-like creatures are any indication.
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like what we've come up with? Feel like picking your own place? There's a whole host of lovely locations to choose from in the City.
Scenarios
1. NEW ARRIVAL - Step off that train, walk down the street. People usually latch on to newcomers to try and help them out. Even if you look shy, the other residents probably won't be!
2. WATCH TALK - Feeling lost? Disoriented? Don't worry, everyone feels that way on their first day. Fortunately - if the signs at the station are to believed - the watch in your pocket can be used to talk to whoever else might be here.
3. BAD WEATHER - Aw, man. Whether it's snow, or rain, or just plain cold, today was definitely the wrong day to get dumped off in a City in the middle of nowhere.
4. A RUN-IN - Maybe you weren't watching. Maybe they weren't. Either way, you just bumped into someone. Perhaps apologies are in order?
5. HELP, IT HURTS - Clumsy, aren't you? Perhaps wherever the train brought you from wasn't so friendly, or you just tripped and twisted your ankle. Either way, you're in a bit of pain. Hopefully someone will notice your booboos and help patch you up.
6. HUNGRY - It isn't very obvious sometimes that restaurants are what they are, especially in a place like Ruby City. Where can a person go to get a bite to eat around here?
7. MISTAKEN IDENTITY - Hey, there's someone you know! --Or maybe not.
8. BEING FOLLOWED - Maybe you're just being paranoid, or maybe you've got a reason to be afraid. Whatever it is, it feels like there's eyes on you...
9. EVENTS - Feel free to look through our event tag!
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like any of these ideas? Feel free to come up with your own!
4.1.
What is even stranger is how deserted the place is. Nobody in the streets, not even any kids on their way home from school. If there even is a school for he sure didn't see one. A ghost town. Maybe one of America's nuclear testing sites from a few decades back? But the buildings look too old and weren't those somewhere in the desert.
Lost in deep thought, Germany finally reaches a big obelisk in what he assumes is the city's centre. And just because luck finally decided to look his way, he isn't alone. Someone is standing next to the obelisk and he approaches that someone, calling to them in a loud and clear voice. Even if he tried he couldn't do it any differently.
"Hey, you!"
{{OOC: If you prefer bracket style we can happily switch to that!}}

"You might want to lower your voice if you seek people to actually talk to you." The blond crossed his arms at the brazen man and wondered who he was. He looked new. It was the look over his face. Perhaps, the same look many had when entering the city for the first time. Maybe it would explain his attitude also.
no subject
"Excuse me, uhm ..." He pauses, coughing. Usually nobody ever called him out for bad behavior (except maybe Austria but that had different reasons) so this is a situation he isn't used to. Judging by the accent of the man in front of him he could be one of England's citizens but that still doesn't explain ... "Can you maybe tell me how I ended up here?"
no subject
"You came in on the train, didn't you? That's how we arrive here. No one knows how we got on the train, we just do." He had no idea how he even stepped off the train onto platform when he arrived. It was as if he was supposed to.
"My name is Liquid Snake. Welcome to Ruby City." He held out a hand to the stranger.

Super excited about having found the plot hook, he walked over. "Yes?" he asked, happily. Roy was going to be so pleased! So was Haley! Once... you know.... he found them. Surely he'd find them. Or they'd find him. They were smart like that, and V would help. V worked so hard to find Roy and Haley, Haley would be able to convince V to help find him.
Right?

Inexorably, he turns slowly on his heel with his jaw set tense and makes a valiant attempt to at least look as if his stomach hasn't just done a flip and lodged somewhere in his throat. It's a mixture of feelings, really. He hasn't seen another nation besides America in so long he's almost grown used to being without them.
"A little decorum wouldn't go amiss, Germany," he says tartly, folding his arms. No need to let on to the younger nation that he can feel the icy fingers of dread gently touching the back of his neck.
Re: 4.1.
"Did you need some help?" she asked, long scarf nearly brushing the ground, despite being looped several times around her neck.
yona | yona of the dawn
ii. is this thing on?
iii. wabbit season or duck season
Re: Yona – i
Hey.
You look new.
[He's fatigued from all of the events that have happened recently, but he's doing his best to not let it show. Still, his brevity was unusual; most people knew him as verbose, even if they didn't know the word for it.]
[His blade was somewhat obvious, his jacket far more so. The nineteen-year-old's attempt at a smile was probably the last thing a person would notice, but it was genuine.]
no subject
I am, [she says with a small nod.]
[Looking him over, he seems to be older than her and closer to Hak or Soo Won's age. Her gaze does get caught on his blade though and Yona reflexively takes a small half-step back when she notices it. She forces herself to look away from it quickly, back to his face.]
My name is Rina.
[She lies about her name smoothly as she's able to sometimes. It's always a hard decision to make, but it's made easier with the visible weapon. The others would want her to be careful if she doesn't know which way that weapon will point, and they're probably right. For all she knows, this place is just like Awa and he's an official of some sort. It's better to not hesitate or debate about whether she's Yona or Rina today.]
no subject
[It doesn't escape his notice, her eyes catching on the hilt over his shoulder. But he's too tired to care about the little things at the moment.]
I'm Julian.
As you've probably read on the posters, this is Ruby City. Populated by seventy-something people who've stepped off that train.
[A pause follows, but he fills the silence before it gets too long.]
Three things:
You're probably going to be stuck here for a while. I've been here more than five months, or near two seasons' time. The train only comes 'round to bring new people and there's no other way off this island.
And don't worry about anyone that's back home – the way time works 'round here, they won't notice you're gone. There's a few people who're related to each other that arrived at different times and never noticed their family went missing.
Lastly, everything's free. One of the mercies about this place. If you want to live in one of the houses, step inside and see if it looks lived in – the current residents probably won't mind. Food can be found in the city centre, where most of the shops are.
no subject
[But looking at Julian, she doesn't think he probably has the answer to that question. Maybe he does to her other question.]
Free? [Once, Yona might not have questioned this. She never knew what it was like to not have money or to go without. But now she does and she understands that money is somewhat of a double-edged sword. It creates stability, an easy means of exchange and value upon goods, but it also creates want and debt. It's the latter that she's immediately concerned with. Free... There has to be a catch somewhere.] How is that possible if there are shops?
no subject
[Having noted that she was uncomfortable with his blade earlier, he decides to inform her of why he has it out.]
Unless you're confident that you can handle yourself in a fight and have a hunter's senses, don't step too far outside the city. All kinds of creatures roam this island – wargs, wendigos, kelpies and worse. There are non-aggressive creatures as well, but you'll have to keep watch for those three primarily.
… If you want to improve your skills, there's a training school next to the old police station. The headmaster knows most mêlée weapons and there's another instructor who's mastered all kinds of ranged weapons. I spend at least an hour a day there to maintain my proficiencies.
We don't have any instructors for magic of any kind, though.
no subject
You sure do know a lot... [She comments carefully, not even knowing what to say to any of it.] Are you an official, Julian?
no subject
[He takes a moment to realise what the nervous smile means. Normally, he'd get it pretty quickly – but he's not had peace and quiet for very long between all these events.]
If you feel I'm overloading you, I'm really sorry. I ramble when I'm tired.
…
Would you mind a tour of the place?
no subject
If you have the time! I've never been to a city like this before.
no subject
We can head to the city centre and work out where best to start from there.
[Julian was subconsciously glad he'd gotten a second lightweight coat, since his first could be so disorienting – vantablack was useful, but only sometimes. The open outerwear fluttered slightly as he turned in the direction of the centre with its obelisk.]
What d'you think you'd be most interested in: a library, a an old theatre, an observatory or a lake?
no subject
Mmm... [She worries her lower lip for a moment before looking up at him.] They all sound wonderful. We should go to whichever's closest to the center of the city!
no subject
[He realised that he'd inadvertently left out the Overseers, but left that topic for the time being. It wouldn't do to ruin her happiness like that.]
I've been wanting to grab a few more books to read myself, so this would fit into my schedule nicely – if I had one.
[He slowed down a bit to let her better take in the city centre when they arrived. The obelisk pulsed faintly as it always did, sitting on its plinth as the most easily noticed feature. It was being its usual ominous self, so Julian mostly ignored it.]
We've come from the northwest and we're headed for the eastern side.
no subject
[She does, however, spare a glance at the obelisk as they pass it.]
Um... Has that, [she says, pointing to it, although likely unnecessarily,] always been here?
no subject
[He only cast a brief glance its way, enough for him to be sure that it wasn't about to shatter.]
You'll get used to it being there, eventually.
[The young man led them down the road that led to the Library.]
There it is. If you don't want to get lost for an hour or more, it'd be best for you to tell me now. It's like a maze in there, trust me.
sorry this is late, i had company over!
[She comes to a stop beside him outside the library. She looks up at the building first and then at him, questioningly.]
A maze?
All good!
[He stops walking long enough to open the doors and let her enter first.]
The system of categorisation is one I don't recognise and books rarely are in the same place two days in a row, even though there's few enough people who frequent the building. There are ghosts that sometimes wander through, though. They're usually unobtrusive and pretty friendly, but they don't talk; they might mess up the organisation.
Also, surest way to the front if you can't remember is to follow one wall.
ii
[That's something he doesn't see every day, not even here. Someone who is wary enough to not give her real name, but not used enough to concealing her identity to entirely hide the fact that she is. It worries him, and he's not entirely sure whether he's worried for his people (if she's a potential threat) or her (if she perceives some threat to her own person). Either way, it's not good. He has to find out more.]
Asking is never impudent. Insisting is, but you aren't.
I don't know how to fight with a sword, but I can be a sparring partner at the very least. Or if you're interested in learning to fight in general, I have a fair amount of experience with other projectiles. You could, in trade, teach me to use a bow and arrow, or you could let me try out some meals or clothes on you, because—
[He smiles faintly.]
As it happens, cooking and sewing are two things I am fairly well-versed in these days.
no subject
[What grabs her attention more than all of that, however, is his request for her to teach him. She never expected that someone would want her to teach them how to use a bow and arrow. Not when she still feels like a novice in so many ways and she had spent so much of her life forbidden from ever even touching a weapon . . . But if he really doesn't know anything about it, maybe she can at least teach him the basics.]
[She smiles wide, but gently so. As nice as it would be to take it easy and just accept good food and pretty clothes like she used to, she doesn't think she could in good conscience take advantage of that and not actually give him something back. Besides, this might be a good test for her to see how far she's come.]
Mm, are you sure? To learn it right, you have to shoot 200 arrows a day.
[From her smile, it's probably obvious that she's teasing. She wouldn't really make him fire 200 arrows a day if he didn't want to. But Hak was right, that really was the best way to learn.]
no subject
[He raises his eyebrows in surprise, as though he is perhaps shocked that she'd ask him something like that. Someone so pampered, do something so strenuous? Never.]
[Except the next second he's grinning and leaning back, resting his elbows on the arms of his chair.]
Are you saying you don't think I could? If you're going to challenge me, I'll definitely do it.
no subject
It's hard to do that many at first! I could barely shoot five in a row when I started to learn! My arms would get really sore and my hands got blisters after a while!
[Saying things like that... It feels a little bit like who she used to be and who she is now. On the one hand, Princess Yona always was quick to complain about even the slightest inconvenience and would huff if others gave her a hard time for struggling to learn something. But on the other, she never would have pushed herself as hard as she did to learn as much and as quickly as she had. The first sign of a sore muscle let alone a blister would have led her to stop immediately. But it's the next thing that feels the most like the marriage of the princess she was and the person she is now.]
But I practiced every night and now I bet I could do more than 200 if I wanted.
[It's that pride in who she is, even if it feels like she's a completely different person and the pride comes from a different place. At its core, it's still the same thing.]
hak | yona of the dawn
[One of the benefits of arriving in a strange place still furnished with your very own extremely lethal weapon is that there's no question as to what to do first. Not that there ever is, with Hak; he so rarely hesitates, could probably stand to do it more, but in a crisis, at least, he's dependable.]
[The trouble, the first thing he needs to fix, is that no one is here to depend on him. That isn't correct. This isn't Kouka, of course, but that's a secondary concern. He was brought here by an enemy, obviously, and as such his job is to kill them and find Yona, not necessarily in that order. Ideally not in that order.]
[He could really do with a handful of dragons right now. Figures that when you need them they're nowhere around.]
[In any case: he starts making his way away from the train station. He won't get far, though. Because the first person he meets, if they get close enough, will have the blade of his hsu quandao resting delicately against their throat and a blank, Very Done stare leveled in their direction.]
Take me to whoever's in charge. And do it quickly if you don't want to get a lot shorter.
[He's so cool.]
two. network
[Witness: one staring face. Hak is lots of things, many of them good, even, but none of them are tech savvy, so. He just starts poking at the buttons at a fairly dizzying speed. Whoop, his screen's turned sideways. Whoop, it's black and white now. Black and white and upside down. Sepia! Who knew. Normal again, and—]
[And now it's voice. There's silence for a moment before he speaks, flatly.]
Did it stop doing that? Finally. Who needs that . . .
I need new clothes. These have blood on them. Where can I find those?
[A beat. And another. Eventually:]
It's not mine.
networks it up are u ready
Well.
At least there is something to be said for having had some time to learn the network and its functions before this, as it means there is no fumbling, no spinning screens or changing filters in the response Hak gets -- in fact, there is nothing. Not in terms of video, anyway, even though the one responding has zero faith in his own anonymity, even like this... after all, Hak would know his voice.
It is tempting, to leave the post without a response; and yet, it is still better for him to announce his presence like this- without the two of them face to face. He still remembers all too well what happened the last time they truly saw each other. ]
Not your blood... whose is it, I wonder? [ His voice, unchanged though it is, is steady, unreadable, a far cry from the bright and carefree laughs from their childhood. ]
NO I'M HONESTLY NOT
[The change in him is palpable immediately, even over audio. The heat of rage bleeds through the watches; he wishes it was hot enough to truly burn.]
Don't act like you don't have theories. You always do.
jumps back here a week late wEL P
The change in his old friend's voice is only to be expected, yet it still feels him with the same emptiness it did, before, back home. ]
I thought you might not care for those theories... Thunder Beast. [ Thought, knew, the same difference. ]
cradles you to my bosom tbh
Since when do you care about my cares, Your Majesty? Mine or anyone's? Surely you'll tell me whether I want you to or not. King Soo-Won bows to no man.
[No man. He'll bow to Yona, soon enough, right up until he loses his head.]
