One can find enough to do, if one looks, but I would advise not going beyond the city limits.

Yes, although they rarely enter the city. But they're the reason you shouldn't try to leave it. They're quite dangerous.

R-Right... [He's blaming the cold for that stutter. Not the fear.]

But you can fight then, right?

[Now he's dealing with a cold, frightened child. He's probably not doing this right.]

[He's the most magical martial arts priest you ever saw.

Belatedly, he seems to remember his Christian duty, looking down at the shivering, wide-eyed child.]

There should be some blankets here.

[Good. Fighting was good. And blankets. They were good too. So Kerry left the man and looked around for some, returning with one around his shoulder wishing he'd been told about this sooner.]

Is the weather always this cold?

[Kirei oversees this search in a vaguely adult way, without actively helping. The blankets aren't far.]

It's not always this cold. It's winter. I assume it will grow warmer as spring approaches.

[Excuse Kirei for a minute, as he only really took in one word there. For once, he's taken off guard, surprised by the name.]

Kiritsugu?

[He considers Kiritsugu anew. Ruby City has already brought in his dead wife, his daughter, and the Matou magus, so why not? But they had at least been recognizable. Could this child really be him?]

Kiritsugu Emiya?

Um...yeah...[Being known could not be good so he takes a step back, clutching his blanket tighter around him and wondering what the priest would do next.]

[Kirei doesn't move as Kiritsugu steps back.]

Interesting. This place brings people from different times. I know you, in your future. When you're an adult.

[Not that he's going to explain exactly how or why he knows him. Behind his more or less blank expression, he's studying Kiritsugu, fascinated. So this boy becomes that man? That man who's so empty inside, who could be someone like himself... But this boy doesn't remind him at all of himself as a child.]

[Kerry's not too sure how to answer that. But eventually, his brain catches up and he finds the words to ask some questions, even if they aren't the most articulate.]

What's the future like? ...What am I like?

That's a difficult question to answer. In some ways, the future is not too different from your present, but time has passed, and things have changed. You'd have to be more specific.

I wouldn't say I know you very well. It might be more accurate to say that I know of you. Perhaps I shouldn't tell you too much about your future.

[That's right. It's for Kiritsugu's own good, not because he wants to hide anything from him.]

[He paused, one question on the tip of his tongue. But eventually he got the courage to ask it.]

Is the world a better place...in the future I mean?

[Kirei isn't the kind of adult to soften truths for a child. He doesn't know what exactly Kiritsugu is thinking of, what kind of present he's comparing the future to, but he's confident enough in his answer.]

No. The world isn't any better.

[Kerry looks down. So it seemed no matter his choices, he fails again. He's not sure what to think now or what to do. What's the point in trying something if you know you're going to fail?]
