[As evasions go, this one is beyond transparent.]

[Yeah, and she's not letting up on it just yet.]

Oh yeah? I thought you didn't like cake.

Gotta try it at least once to find out, don't you?

[Now they're not talking about cake again. Oops.]

[Folding her arms and judging you.]

So you decided you didn't like it, huh?

[Siiigh.] Guess I'll have to eat my cake with someone else, then...ho-hum.

Is that what I said? if you got a point to make, why not lay your cards on the table first? I think I've been pretty good about playing along so far.

[Glower.]

[Ooh, now that was an interesting reaction...]

A-ha! So you do like it! [Chinhanding.] Y'got a favorite?

[How's that throat feeling, by the way?]

I like green tea and coconut. Or kasutera with just a little bit of caramel. I like making sweet potato cakes, but I don't really care whether or not people save any for me. And fruit's all right if it's got the real stuff in and not just flavoring.

[His answer is gravel-voiced, still fairly quiet. He arches an eyebrow and settles into his seat, waiting.]

Guess you could say I've tried everything. What about you?

[For a moment she forgot the double entendre she'd intended, but with that concluding sentence, she was quickly reminded.

Bah, it wasn't working, now she's the one getting flustered.]

...a...m...my favorite...

Turnabout's fair play, right? Come on, you can't expect me to say anything if you're not going to.

[Either he's very serious about cake or he's enjoying twisting the screws, but either way, his voice is level and his face is serious but vaguely innocent.]

[All is not lost. She could still turn this around on him if she wanted...]

...L...lavender...with lemon! [Yeah! She's totally got this!] Relaxing, soothing. A little sour with the sweet.

[Damn, she's good.]

Yeah?

[There's a niggling hint of curiosity in his voice, evident even buried as it is, and before he says anything else he takes a long sip of the freshly arrived tea and sighs in satisfaction.

All right, maybe she was right about this tea shop idea.]

And exactly how much cake have you tried, anyway?

[Which isn't to say he's gonna stop messing with her.]

[A knowing smile crosses Minako's face--maybe a smirk, actually--and she sits back.]

Enough to know what I'm talking about. But naturally, I'm a girl, so trying out cakes and other things comes with the territory!

[She weaves her fingers together and flexes them before picking up her cup of tea.]

You don't have to try everything to know what you like and don't like!

Other things, huh?

[Pause for more tea, staring at her over the rim of the cup.]

You might think you know. But how are you gonna be sure?

[She saw that look...and she shifts in her seat a bit.]

...you don't have to be sure. As long as you're happy. I guess.

... Yeah, maybe.

[He's only going to give that ground because it's a tender subject. She shouldn't have to eat any more cake than she wants to, right? He's not gonna be the jackass who says otherwise. But this talk about being happy...]

[Ouch isn't this an awkward silence. Minako slowly brings her tea to her lips and sips.] Mn--[She sets it down, cradling her chin on her hands and beaming across the table.]

I want to try some of the cake you're talking about, though! ♥ [She giggles and leans in slightly.] I'm curious what kind of cake you'd make for me...what suits me, I wonder..?

You already said what your favorite was.

[Unless that was a metaphor. Regardless, his answer comes out rushed.]

[Minako pouts her lips out and lightly nudges Shinjiro's leg with her foot beneath the table.]

But senpai, this is different! Besides--! [She lewdly grins.] I thought you'd enjoy the opportunity to influence my outlook. I mean, who knows? Maybe you can change my mind.

[Suddenly, he's choking and spluttering on what was a composure-saving sip of tea.]

[Was it her words, or the tip of her toe creeping up his leg? Minako smugly smiles and applies slightly more pressure.]

I thought the tea was supposed to help your throat, senpai.

Don't be a smartass.

Caught me by surprise, that's all.

Uh-huh.

[She isn't buying it. So she'll just creep her toe up closer to his knee.]

Is that -- you really want to be doing that?

[He's having a little trouble keeping his voice down, but he's trying.]

I think the real question is--

[Her voice lowers in volume, as intimate as the steam wafting between them from their respective teacups.]

--do you really want me to be doing this?

I just... want to make sure you know what you're doin', that's all.

[His tone is an evasive mumble.]
