RUBY CITY EVENT
Dream Walking
As the sun sets on
Saturday, September 6th, a strange sound can be heard winding its way between the newly arranged buildings of Ruby City. It bounces off stone and slides across glass and creeps into cracks. It is lonely and low and it grips the heart like ghostly
whalesong. No matter if one is plant, animal, or mineral, all who hear the song (and believe you me, all will hear it) they will fall into a deep, deep slumber.
Fog blankets the city, and not just any fog. It shines a starry silver rainbow like a nebula touched down to earth and within this fog move the dreams of the sleepers, ever mixing and merging. Some know they are dreaming and live their wildest fantasies, both wonderful and terrible. Some do not and wander as if nothing at all is amiss, accepting the strange abstract laws of the dreaming world as they come. As the dreams mix those visiting the night visions of others will bring bits of their own subconscious with them, leaking it wherever they go. As things often are in dreams, nothing is always what it seems. This fantastical visitation has a purpose though. While the dream selves of the citizens drift through the cloud of sleep, something else slips between the buildings.
The
Night Mares have come. Sleek black animals that disguise themselves as horses of flesh and blood slither between buildings and corrupt all they encounter. They feed off the dreams of sentient beings, removing all that is good and leaving inky terror in their wake. Sweet dreams turn into nightmares. Nightmares turn into night terrors and those the inky tendrils touch will have far worse to combat than waking up in a cold sweat.
People are going to die.Once the nightmares set in, moans of pain can be heard across the town as sleeping bodies gain very, very real injuries. Scrapes and scratches. Bumps and bruises. As the nightmares rage on the injuries grow worse and worse. Slashed skin. Broken bones.
Death in dreams, it is said, symbolizes birth. A sleeper may fall to a terrible blow in dreams and suddenly find themselves freed from the Night Mare's grip. They sit up, perhaps a little battered and stiff--dusty even, but awake. The world is asleep and as the Night Mares continue their grim grazing they must make a decision: cower in their homes or seek out the sleepers and save them.
The sleepers will sleep on until something wakes them up or until the Night Mares have gone. They can be injured and frightened like any beast but will eventually leave of their own accord--but by then it may be too late for some. Getting your beauty rest is one thing but those with bodies needing normal sustenance are at the mercy of those around them. The Night Mare's fog will keep them alive but only for so long.
THAT SURE IS SPOOPY. WHAT IS HAPPENING EXACTLY?Some super nasty nightmare horses have trotted into town, knocked everyone out, and are feeding off the bad vibes given off by good dreams being turned into terror-fests. The problem is people can't eat or drink while they're asleep and on top of that, as the event goes on and characters remain asleep they start gaining real injuries from their subconscious misadventures. That's bad.
Characters can wake up by hearing something from the outside world (ruckus in the streets, being woken up by another character, etc...) or something from their dream world (extreme jolting fear, DYING, or something completely random. Dreams are weird.)
If you so wish, your character can REALIZE they are dreaming and change the dream (theirs or any they walk through) into a lucid dream and bend it to their will. This is super helpful if they stumble onto someone who is suffering from a nightmare.
As characters dreamwalk bits of their own dream or their very subconscious may 'leak' into the dreams they are visiting.
Characters might appear differently than they normally do when they enter the dream of another! Really, guys, go nuts! Use symbolism! Include clowns!
You can have your character start out with a good, normal, weird, or even nightmarish dream. Feel free to post with multiple dream scenarios.
