RUMOR WAR EVENT
Through the Looking Glass
SUMMARY:
During this mild horror/adventure event, characters will be pulled into a world which is a reflection of the American McGee's Alice canon. Participants will slowly regain the memories lost earlier in the month and be forced to face them, either ultimately confronting them or choosing to flee.
NPCs:
Diligence (Dil Blackwood), Sloth (Ariel Slavkov), Kindness (Tim Lear)
EVENT DURATION:
October 19-30
EFFECTS:
IC: Characters will feel compelled to touch the mirror that beckons them to Wonderland, but this is optional. There will be no physical or mental changes to the characters, save for the regain of lost memories and the consequences of their final decisions in the event. All deaths occurring through the event will result in the immediate expulsion of the character from Wonderland. Any occurring outside of Wonderland will incur the usual penalties.

OOC:
Any relevant actions taken by characters will ideally be logged in the provided post. 'CONFRONT' will involve an individual directly confronting a situation or obstacle. 'FLEE' relates to the opposite - a situation or obstacle being avoided or fled from. 'HELP' requires someone stepping in to actively assist someone else with a problem or fear.
ENVIRONMENT CHANGES:
No changes in the environment of Ruby City itself. This event will take place in an 'alternate dimension' accessed via mirrors.
EVENT DETAILS:
Stage One-
Mirrors have long been viewed as portals in varying ways, and now they become a portal to a strange other dimension only viewable once it has been passed into. Everyone - but particularly those who had a memory taken from them earlier in the month - will begin to see strange things from the corner of their eye in each mirror they pass. Perhaps they see themselves, but their reflection looks 'different', or the scene they see mirrored back to them is somehow twisted in a way which cannot be pinpointed, but is more felt than seen. Whatever it is, it's enough to eventually draw attention.

'Why not touch it?' is the thought that runs, unbidden but completely sensible, through each individual's mind. The compulsion is there, for a few moments, and if acted on will immediately pull the person through the surface of the mirror (no matter the mirror's size) into a strange, grassy glade, populated by trees and colourful plants, with a clear river running through it. Others may already be present, sizing up their situation when the cat appears, looking over those gathered as if utterly exasperated that they are present.

The creature will introduce itself as the Cheshire Cat, and the area around it as the Vale of Tears. This, it will tell you, is the only 'safe' space remaining in this world. You see, Wonderland is very much influenced by the minds of those roaming inside it, and so many minds at once is just no good at all. So, the cat would very much like you all gone. It's a matter of keeping things tidy, you understand.

But things are never that easy. The Cheshire Cat can't simply send everyone back. All he can do is make things a little easier than they were for the last poor, confused girl who stumbled her way through here. Identifying those who have lost memories, he will ask them directly if they think that they might have forgotten something... in that smug, knowing way that suggests that the question is entirely rhetorical. These are the people that Wonderland will mold itself around, taking their memories and turning them into challenges and puzzles to be faced, worked through and overcome.

Of course, you're free to stay in the Vale of Tears, nice and safe, until enough people have been expelled from Wonderland that it isn't quite so difficult to remove the rest, but where would be the fun in that?

Stage Two-

The shallow river running through the Vale appears to be its only exit, though splits into several different paths just out of sight. Each appears identical, flanked by high cliffs, but once one is chosen the others will disappear - leaving only one path back to the Vale, which will be completely empty if returned to. The cliffs will quickly begin to drop, the river continuing to flow in a strangely bright shade of blue through the landscape. The sky holds no discernable sun despite the apparent daylight, and is 'painted' in pastel colours that sting the eyes if stared at for too long.

On leaving the Vale of Tears, each lost memory will begin to distort Wonderland. The Cat will advise that no one travel in a group larger than four or five, but such recommendations are more guidelines than actual rules. If only a single person in a group has lost experiences, it is only their psyche that will change the world around them. If there are multiple people, however, their absent memories may mix and blend together in some unexpected ways! Those who were taken through a mirror with their minds fully intact will be able to assist their friends and companions, but will have no effect on the way that the world around them changes.

As each group moves towards their escape they will pass through three 'layers' of Wonderland, each ending in a freestanding door which may be opened and passed through to reach the next stage.

Upon first leaving the Vale, the world will not seem terribly different at all. The first layer is almost easy, plagued with only minor annoyances that are only vaguely familiar. However, the deeper your characters venture, the more the environment will twist to match them. Everything from the trees to the grass to the clouds and the sky will reflect the adventurers' lost memories in some way. As they progress to the second layer of their Wonderland, their paths may become obstructed by tedious puzzles, forboding pits, or frightening imagery. Beasties, seemingly plucked right out of their most private of stress dreams may also be nipping at their heels. These creatures, when dispatched either close up or at range, will shatter like glass.

Through the third and last door is a final confrontation. A manifestation of the memory, event or personal shortcoming which has not been faced or overcome may be either faced or fled from. Reaching the final stage will result in the return of everything that was lost and the individual (or individuals) may make the choice to face up to their problem and admit it to themselves and/or their companions.. or to continue ignoring it.

No one would be blamed for taking the easy way out, but it is the easy way.

Stage Three-

Passing through the final stage in one way or another will free the group from Wonderland and the grasp of the mirror, back into Ruby City.

---

Once the event begins, those who resist the urge to touch the mirrors may see brief snatches of what is happening to different groups and hear voices coming from reflective surfaces. They will, unfortunately, be unable to help without going through the looking glass...

---

A log will be set up for the purpose of this event, but there will also be a second tracking log for the purpose of tracking what each character does throughout their journey through Wonderland. Is your character a coward who will run and hide? Do they step in to help other people get over their fears? Will they confront their own? Each layer of Wonderland will have a separate header, under which you can comment with 'confront', 'flee', or 'help' and a brief description of what your character did. Each can be hit more than once! This will be for the purpose of tracking Diligence, Sloth and Kindness.
NETWORK CHANGES:
There will be no major changes to the network. Characters in Wonderland will still be able to contact those on the outside, though the feed may cut out or have poor reception.
REQUIRED SIGNUPS:
Signups are not required. If you are yet to choose a memory for your character to lose, you can still do that.
OPT OUT OPTIONS:
There are no specific steps to take for opting-out; simply don't participate.

If you have any questions, please ask them under the comment headed "Questions". Otherwise, feel free to use this post for plotting purposes!

RUMOR WAR EVENT
PokeMania! - FAQ

As with every Rumor War event, we want to ensure that every detail is as clear as possible, so please take a look over this compilation of the questions we’ve received so far to ensure all your questions have been answered!

Yay, Pokemon! But why will there only be Legendaries/Mythicals? That means my favorite won’t be available!
We’re sorry that this has been a disappointment, but the decision to include only Legendaries/Mythicals was made for two reasons:

First, with over 700 Pokemon created across all six generations, we absolutely had to limit the number that are available to catch in this event from a logistics standpoint; otherwise, the RNG would be impossible to run in a timely manner!

Second, when determining which Pokemon would make the cut, we took into account the Pokemon Ikaros himself would want to bring to the island -- and, like most little boys, he likes the rarest and most powerful ones best.

Why can’t we keep the Pokemon after the event?
Ruby City is not a Pokemon-based game. We understand that Pokemon is a very popular franchise, but this is only an event; we will not be changing the nature of the game because of it.

Will characters be ICly told that they will not be able to keep their Pokemon?
As none of the Virtues or Vices ever have a sure idea of what Ikaros is up to, neither Gene nor Ava would be able to tell player characters that the Pokemon will disappear at the end of the event.

Will there be more than one of each kind of Pokemon available (i.e. more than one Zapdos)?
No, there will be only one of each kind of Pokemon available (i.e. only one Zapdos).

Are you sure there will be enough Pokemon for all the participants?
We were sure to consider the response to the last Rumor War when creating the mechanics for this one, so we’re expecting the initial waves of Pokemon to be more than enough. In the case that it is not, we will introduce a third wave as well.

My character has xyz ability/trait. Do they get boosted chances at catching Pokemon/in the tournament?
Unfortunately, we cannot allow particular characters to gain an advantage over others in catching Pokemon. We want to keep the playing field even for everyone! That being said, don't worry too much about the tournament, guys. ;)

Will my incorporeal character be able to use the items Gene and Ava give them?
Absolutely!

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask them here, and please continue using the original event post for plotting purposes. Thank you for your attention!

RUMOR WAR EVENT
PokeMania!

Hello, Ruby City! With less than a week left before the start of our third Rumor War event, we'd like to announce the details for PokeMania!

SUMMARY:
During this adventure/comedy event, Legendary (and Mythical, if additional capture opportunities are needed) Pokemon have been scattered across the island. Using one of two methods, player characters may take on the role of trainer and attempt to capture these creatures for the sake of a tournament to be held on final day of the event. With the promise of a wish granted awaiting the winner, who will claim the title of Pokemon Champion? Just remember: hijinks will ensue!

NPCs:
Gene Jecklin (Kindness) versus Ava Rice (Greed)

EVENT DURATION:
July 20 - 30

IC EFFECTS:
There will be no physical or mental changes to characters; however, Gene and Ava will grant all participating characters one Pokeball and one Escape Rope (an item which will transport them back to the Obelisk, no matter where they are on the island) every day they choose to search for Pokemon.

ENVIRONMENT CHANGES:
The only change to the environment will be a portal at the top of the Clocktower that leads to an alternate dimension (similar to the Distortion World) where certain Pokemon can be found. Otherwise, to cut down on travel time, the Gene and Ava will provide instant transport to a few locations outside the city: the forest (center), the plains (between the beach and lake), and the mountains (center). However, as the Pokemon franchise is based on travel and exploration, they cannot take characters straight to any Pokemon; this is the reason why only one encounter is allowed per day.

PLAY CHANGES:
Capture RNG -- Once a day, based on a random roll of numbers 1 through 10, characters will be able to attempt to catch the Pokemon spread across the island. One of two methods may be employed:

Forcible Capture
  • This means of catching Pokemon is, theoretically, much quicker and more efficient, but it is very stressful for the Pokemon.

  • Begins with a 20% success rate (must roll a 9 or 10).

  • Chances can be increased by 20% for every additional character the first brings with them (two characters nets 40%, a roll of 7 through 10 would be successful; three characters nets 60%, a roll of 5 through 10 would be successful; etc.)

Befriending
  • This means of capture is, theoretically, much slower and less efficient, but would be considered more humane.

  • Also begins with a 20% success rate (must roll a 9 or 10).

  • Chances will increase by 20% for every successive day a single character spends attempting to capture the same Pokemon (two days nets 40%, a roll of 7 through 10 would be successful; three days nets 60%, a roll of 5 through 10 would be successful; etc.)

For every day that participating characters choose to search for Pokemon, players must fill out the following form and post it beneath the comment headed with the day’s date:

All forms must be posted by 11:59EST every day so that the RNG can be run at midnight EST; the results will be posted shortly after. Pokemon can be found in the following locations:

  • Alternate dimension (6)

  • Watch towers (4)

  • Catacombs (3)

  • Hot springs (3)

  • Field (6)

  • Lake (3)

  • Forest (2)

  • Sea caves (2)

  • Islands (2)

  • Mountains (low altitude) (3)

  • Mountains (high altitude) (4)

If you’re hoping for a particular Pokemon, keep in mind their natural habitat/where they are found in their respective games. Also note that, in their search, some characters may find a surprise waiting for them!

NETWORK CHANGES:
There will be no changes to the network.

REQUIRED SIGNUPS:
Signups are not required! Characters just need to handwave picking up their Pokeballs and they will be allowed to participate.

OPT OUT OPTIONS:
There are no specific steps to take for opting-out; simply don’t participate.

EVENT REWARDS:
All participants will receive one Trainer Card with record of all the Pokemon they caught or helped catch. In addition, they will receive a commemorative boxed set of badges from the player’s choice of league.

Please note that characters will NOT be allowed to keep their Pokemon after the event.

If you have any questions, please ask them under the comment headed "Questions". Otherwise, feel free to use this post for plotting purposes!

RUMOR WAR EVENT
Despair Disease

Good day, Ruby City.

It's finally time for the first Rumour War event of Ruby City; the Despair Disease. This event is going to be a little more involved and require a bit more participation, but don't worry; you are not at all obligated to have your characters contract the disease. Some will and some won't.

As you all know by now, Ikaros has been collecting stories. For this first event, thanks to a player submission, we'll be using a story from Super Dangan Ronpa 2 and altering it to ensure a Win or Lose. During this event we'll be using Chance Mechanics such as those used during the Summer Festival as well as a character-altering disease. Please keep in mind that while the nature of this event is Survival and Mild Psych Horror genre, not all Story Events will be.

We hope that this event will show how involved we would like stories to be, and will encourage you to suggest story event ideas that you may want to see as well.

A Note: Ruby City is in no way becoming a full "horror" game, despite its original genre. Ruby City is a story and survival game that will be capitalising on multiple genres through events, meaning that some events will incorporate horror elements, but will not be limited to them. Adventure, crack, entertainment, puzzle, and all other sorts of genres will be permitted and incorporated. Remember that not all events will be rumor war events and not all events will require this much attention! We will always have easier events in between as a "cool down" period.

QUICK SUMMARY:

Some characters will contract a contagious disease that causes symptoms of Despair. Others will be encouraged to cure them or to kill them. A lack of food will require Prize Cards to be traded for food or medicine inside of the city. Characters will be able to obtain more Prize Cards at Chance Kiosks.

IC EVENT DURATION

  • January 20 - January 30

  • EVENT GOAL

  • Obtain Prize Cards from betting machines to obtain either Cure Phials or more Prize Cards

  • Use Prize cards to obtain food or medical supplies, OR use Cure Phials to cure the infected of the Despair Disease.

  • Curing at least 60% of the infected individuals by the end date will ensure maximum Rumour Points for Chari (Charity).

  • Killing more than 30% of the infected will ensure maximum Rumour Points for Ratter (Wrath).

  • Failing to cure 60% of the infected will ensure maximum Rumour Points for Callie (Greed).

  • IC EFFECTS

  • Despair disease will infect those who have signed up. Though behavioural symptoms will vary depending on the person, there will be Three Strains of the disease.

  • The Despair disease is contagious and is spread through prolonged contact. However, some people will be naturally resistant to the disease, so you don't have to have your character catch it if you do not want them to.

  • For the first 1-3 days of someone having the Despair Disease, they will experience high fever and swirl patterns will be visible in their irises. During this incubation period, symptoms cannot be cured. Fevers will continue until the disease is cured.

  • Star Disease will be categorised by behaviours resembling hysteria and acute pleasure in despair OR by desperate apathy. This disease will be identifiable by the appearance of a star shape in the infected's iris. This disease can be cured using Cure Phial X.

  • Heart Disease will be categorised by feelings of subservience and gullibility or overpowering devotion and obsession to 'love'. And not in the happy way; characters afflicted with that particular disease will be willing to do just about anything for the object of their obsession, even kill. This disease will be identifiable by the appearance of a heart shape in the infected's iris. This disease can be cured using Cure Phial Y.

  • Triangle Disease will be categorised by inconsolable sadness (of the openly weeping variety) and inexplicable cowardliness or compulsive lying. This disease will be identifiable by the appearance of a triangle shape in the infected's iris. This disease can be cured using Cure Phial Z.

  • Because the disease is highly contagious, characters will be encouraged by Ratter to eliminate those who are infected, as it is both cheaper and quicker to kill them than to cure them.

  • Those with the disease, in addition to their specific symptoms, are all highly dangerous and will not feel remorse in killing or harming others, no matter how kind or "good" they were originally.

  • Even non-organic characters are viable to become infected by the disease. This has to do with the nature of the city during the event.

  • Three Phials of each Cure are required to cure each infected person. The infected can only consume up to two phials per day. This means that a character cannot be cured in under two days; please plan ahead, as no one can receive all three phials on the last day.

  • Until the third day of the event, characters will not be publicly made aware of the kiosks, cures, or disease. However, investigative minds may put together that the kiosks win them prizes…

  • ENVIRONMENT CHANGES

  • The Despair Disease will affect certain individuals.

  • Some characters may notice that certain buildings and environments may experience temporary visual glitches. These glitches will be visual only and will not affect the individual's ability to interact with the environment.

  • At the beginning of the event, every individual will receive 5 prize cards, whether the individual is capable of consuming food products or not.

  • All Characters will find their watches have changed in appearance to resemble miniature versions of the YELLOW television shown in this picture. At the back of their watches will be a space that holds prize cards. The network will function normally for the duration of the event.

  • Kiosks will appear in place of the three bulletin boards surrounding the Obelisk, where individuals may gamble to win more prize cards.

  • A Vending Machine will be placed in front of the obelisk at the city's center. prize cards may be traded in for ration boxes (of pre-prepared food), ingredients, medical supplies, or 1-5ct boxes of Cure Phials. NOTE: Food does include things specific to vampires, such as bags of blood.

  • On all sides of the pedestal of the Obelisk, a digital-looking board will be placed. On it, the words Charity, Wrath, and Greed are shown with opposing metres. What could this mean?

  • Food and ingredients will not be in stock in any of the unmanned stores during the event. Food that is already in a house or a manned store will remain there until it is consumed.

  • PLAY CHANGES

    IC:
  • Individuals will be urged to play at kiosks. Similar to the summer event, which was a game of chance. However, individuals will be able to increase their chances at winning by betting more prize cards (up to 5) for a more successful roll.

  • Individuals will not experience consequences for murders of anyone infected by the despair disease.

  • OOC:
  • Participants who plan to be infected will need to sign up. This is so that we may track the percentages of those cured and those uncured.

  • Participants who are infected should list their characters underneath the "Infected" list in the Main event log. A blurb will be provided to fill out. Please do not list multiple characters under the same comment.

  • Players whose characters administer cures to the infected may post something along the lines of "[Character name] was given 1x Cure Phial Y on [Day]." When Three cures have been administered, the character will be considered cured and their symptoms will begin to settle.

  • Players whose characters murder an infected individual must comment to that Infected's comment with the day on which the character was murdered. Murders of non-infected characters must be filed the same way as usual, as to permit consequences. People murdered during the event will be restored at the end of the event, and will not have to wait a whole week to be restored.

  • KIOSK RULES:
  • Players will be given the option to bet between 1-5 cards. More cards will give a higher probability for a win. If a player wins, up to their first three cards will always be returned in addition to their winnings. The extra two will only act to increase their chances of winning.

  • Through a Random Roll + Probability, players can win between 1 and 5 cards in addition to what they bet. Should the player lose, they will receive one prize card in condolence.

  • Players can play as often as they want for as long as they want, every day during the event.

  • For an example of what the Kiosk Log will look like, click here.

    VENDING MACHINE PRIZES:

The Vending Machine is a 'modern' style machine with a touch interface and a slot for cards. It is decorated with images of various ugly black and white bears.

  • BLOOD PACK: (1x prize card) Useful for anyone who needs blood, even from a living creature.

  • RATION MEAL: (1x prize card) A standard individual meal. Contains one portion. One portion is enough to feed a standard adult, but may be too little for those with larger appetites. These are dispensed in boxes.

  • INGREDIENT PACK: (2-5x prize cards) A set of ingredients such as flour, sugar, etc. in different varieties for those who would rather cook their own meals. Larger packs or packs that have more variety cost more.

  • CURE PHIALS: (2x prize cards) Available in three varieties. One says "Cure X" and bears a Star label. One says "Cure Y" and bears a heart label. The last says "Cure Z" and bears a triangle label.

  • 3 COUNT BOX OF CURE PHIALS: (4x prize cards) A special deal! Every night after 7pm, you can purchase a box of Cure Phials for only 4 prize cards.

  • NETWORK CHANGES

  • The network will not experience changes for the duration of the event.

  • REQUIRED SIGNUPS

  • Those who will be infected are required to sign up for tracking purposes.

  • EVENT TIMELINE

  • January 20: The Virus starts with some of those who will be infected and they will experience the first stage. Kiosks appear as well as the scoreboard. The shops will be void of food at this time.

  • January 21: The primary infected become Contagious at this time.

  • January 22: Though there will be enough hints for characters to understand what is going on a this point, some NPCs will begin to make announcements and inform the populace.

  • January 30: The event will end. The following day, the city will reset to abide to the winner of the event.

  • OPT OUT OPTIONS

  • Your character does not have to contract the disease. You must sign up in order to be counted among those infected.

  • You may very well ignore what is going on, but note that the famine's existence will still apply.

  • EVENT MODERATORS

  • Head Mods and Stage Hands will be in charge of this event.
