5. The Library: You came to do a little research, but it looks like all of the information's just out of your reach. Though, you can always find a way to pass the time here.

7. Le Cafe Anglais: A Parisian-British fusion that's as charming as it sounds and serves the best tea around.

[That was far too easy; what a fool.]

[Loki's expression subdued as he allowed his hand to drop.]

I was. There were matters that took precedence. Thor needed my assistance; I was... compelled to help.

[The slight edge of venom in his voice was real, something that could not be faked. Of all the people in Asgard, of all the people who's lives he had touched, it was Frigga who had given him the most love. His reactions to her death would not ease for a time, even after having his revenge.]

[Well, it does seem weird, but not impossible. It could be a total lie, but he has no way to test Loki's honesty. He doesn't really have much choice but to believe him, unless he can find some inconsistency, and unfortunately Steve is a basically honest person, while Loki is the god of lies.

He assumes that by 'compelled' he means he was forced to help. But apparently he didn't mind that much if he saved Thor's life]

I thought you hated Thor.

[Again, that irritation flashed across Loki's face, and for a moment, it didn't seem like he was going to answer him. Finally, he let out a slow breath, a hand coming up to rub over his face.]

I do, but I hated the beings that took the life of our mother more.

[He paced away from the Soldier, taking that moment to observe their surroundings. There wasn't much to see in this place, but then again, what was there to see in a world like Earth?]

I realized that Thor was the only one that would be able to carry through revenge. That was all that mattered at the time.

[Steve bites his lip. Wow he had really not expected all of this. He doesn't really feel a tonne of sympathy for Loki, but it's not nice to lose a parent no matter how messed up you are. It's obvious that Loki still cares about that. And of course, that means that Thor lost his mother as well.]

I'm sorry. I didn't know.

[He draws a breath.] Listen, Loki. We're not on Earth or anywhere you've probably heard of. We've been kidnapped and brought to a city in a pocket universe.

[That drew Loki's attention back, and he tilted his head curiously. No... not being on Midgard made sense; a city in a pocket universe seemed a little much for the Soldier to wrap his brain around. Clearly there had to be someone here with more intelligence to have come to that conclusion.]

That would make sense. I doubt the dead are otherwise so easily brought back to life.

[captain_asthmatic]

[Steve is actually pretty bright, okay? But he doesn't have much scientific education by modern standards, particularly about theoretical physics. Things like multiverse theory hadn't even been postulated yet, and certainly wasn't taught in high school.

He's not likely to tell Loki where he heard about it, though. He isn't sure how safe it is to tell him that Jane Foster is here.]

Anyway, I'm not dead. But you're not the first person I've talked to who was killed right before being brought here. Most of the people here aren't from our version of the universe. A lot of them are human, but a lot of them aren't. There are lot of people here who can use magic, too, and some of them could really give you a run for your money or crush you like a bug. We have no idea why we were all brought here, but I think it's some kind of experiment.

[He takes a step towards Loki] What this means is that we have a common enemy. I could use a guy like you to help me get us all out of here. I'd much rather work with you, but I have no problem putting you down if you hurt innocent people.

[...he never thought he would meet someone more trusting than Thor, but this fool was beyond that. He may as well have just written down the names of everyone that he could potentially enslave or destroy and send him off on his merry way.]

You'll forgive me if I'm not exactly keen on rallying behind your cause, Captain. I have much to think about at the moment.

[Like how to work his current situation to his advantage.]

[Loki is here, and Steve can't do anything about that. All he can do is try to convince Loki that it's worthwhile cooperating instead of being enemies, because Steve has enough of those, frankly. If he decides to try to enslave everyone, Steve is sure a lot of people will join together to stop him.]

Fine. No one is forced to help to get home, or even to leave. Once we find a way to escape, no one is going to drag you back home, and if you're dead, then I guess I can see why you're not that motivated to go back. [He's not going to offer to send him somewhere else. Because he will not inflict Loki on any other universe] But if you change your mind, once you've settled in, contact me.

But I mean it about not hurting anyone.

[Loki rolled his eyes skyward at that.]

And will you be the one to stop me, Soldier?

[A smirk crept up on his face, like he was challenging Steve, only for him to relent a moment later. No, he was in no mood to get into a fight here, not when he had an entire pocket dimension to explore.]

You have my word, no harm shall come to the mortals here.

[The, "for now," hung unspoken in the air.]

I'll have help, and lots of it, don't worry.

[He does know he's no match for Loki alone, though that wouldn't stop him from trying. He sighs and rubs a hand over the back of his neck]

Good, then.

[He looked up] So you don't remember being here before either.

I'm sure.

[Hm... and he had to wonder how many of the other so called Avengers were around. He did not specifically call them by name, so he could only assume not. The poor Soldier, all on his own; his next train of thought led him to wonder how many lost souls he had gotten to follow him.]

Should I?

[Quite a few, actually. He has about two-dozen fighters who are working for him on patrols. He knows he can count on several of them to help him with Loki if need be]

From what I've heard, you've been here twice before. I've been here before, too, but I don't remember it. The people who run this place seem to get rid of people and wipe their memories whenever they feel like it.

Well, that's a cheerful thought.

[He was the one that was supposed to manipulate the minds of the weak masses, not the other way around. Excuse him if he seems a bit embittered by that revelation.]

And who told you this?

[Steve might have taken just a bit of pleasure in sharing that particular pain]

A few people have mentioned it to me in different contexts. [Though Jane Foster was the first, and the only one to mention Loki.]

[Careful there, Steve; Loki might enjoy seeing a little bit of evil on your face. Because somewhere in his twisted mind, it means he's gotten under your skin. Still, he did not do anything but nod.]

Anyone I should know?

[He paused, half expecting a critical look, before continuing.]

I've a right to know, least any previous incarnations of me have tempted those who have the capability of treating me like an ant.

[His eyes flicker slightly and he shrugs. He's really not good at lying. At. All.] I doubt you would know them. And I have no idea who you might have pissed off before.

[This conversation was quickly leaning toward being useless. Loki just let out a sigh and a shrug, shaking his head.]

Ah, I suppose I will have to discover that on my own then. What is dying one more time?

[He began to walk away, starting to count down in his head when the Soldier's sense of righteousness would kick in.]

[captain_asthmatic]

[Steve gritted his teeth and moved to follow] Look, if I knew, then I'd tell you. The person who had met you before is my friend and she seemed to think you were a really nice guy, so I'm guessing you did a good job of fooling her.

[See? He can be sarcastic, too.]

And just so you know, if you die you just come back.

[That got Loki to pause, a slow, small smile creeping its way onto his face. He doubted there would be many women in the multiverse that he would leave a good impression on, much less waste his time on, and that just left...]

She?

[He turned slightly, an eyebrow raised. He would address the issue of being revived after death later, but for now:]

She wouldn't happen to be Jane Foster, by any chance?

[captain_asthmatic]

[The surprise and dismay on Steve's face is probably answer enough. Then he clenches his jaw.

He can't understand how Loki had guessed that so easily. There are lots of women in the city. Though only one from their own world. Does that matter so much that Loki immediately knows who he's talking about just from that?

Apparently.]

Yeah, that's right.

[Loki smirked at that, nodding slightly. He was enjoying this, toying with the Soldier. The best part was, he had only told one lie.]

I thought as much. Shielding an individual as forces are exploding above them tends to leave an impression.

[Loki turned to leave again, waiting to hear the man's brain grind to a halt trying to process that.]

[captain_asthmatic]

[It's not actually audible, though the check in his step is.]

What are you talking about?

Oh, she didn't tell you?

[It was a good thing his back was to the Captain; he doubt he would have appreciated the amused smile on his face.]

She had the unfortunate problem of absorbing the Aether. Nasty thing, slowly killing her; we had to allow the only person that could take it out of her do so in hopes to destroy it.

[He paused, glancing back at the Soldier.]

It didn't work, by the way, but the duty to protect her fell on me while Thor tried.

She doesn't know. She was brought here before you came to Earth to steal the Tesseract.

[He rolled that around in his mind. It was certainly hard to believe. There was no one he could ask, no way to verify it.]

So you want me to believe you died protecting Thor's girlfriend. Really?

Really? Hm...

[Well that was a shame... and she still had faith in him, even with the almighty Captain America to tell her what a bad idea that was? Yes, he could see why Thor was so fond of her; they were both far too trusting idiots.]
