[AUGUST] Test Drive

Thinking of apping a character but not sure they'll fit in the city walls?
Have no fear, a meme for you is here.
Directions:
- Use an RNG to choose a location and prompt, or wait for someone else to tag.
- Post with your character with their name and canon on top!
- If you'd like, leave contact info for people to get in contact for plotting and other such shenans.
- Tag around! Make friends. Don't be afraid to chat OOC while tagging.
Locations
1.TRAIN STATION - The place where everyone gets dumped off at. Your first view of Ruby City, complete with informational posters telling you all about where you've ended up.
2. THE BEACH - Lovely year-round, though in the winter months, you're probably not likely to dip your toes in.
3. THE BLACK STALLION - A rather quaint bar. Supposedly, the burgers are great, but you don't see anyone immediately who's willing to serve you. Maybe you're meant to get it yourself.
4. THE OBELISK - The tall monolith in the center of the city marks the gathering place of many events, though right now it seems to be cold and dark.
5. THE CLOCKTOWER - Offering an impressive view of the city, several residents come here to clear their heads, if they don't mind braving the narrow staircase.
6. THE COFFEE JOINT - the front windows are warm and welcoming, and it seems there's always someone friendly enough to fix you a cup when you wander through.
7. THE CATACOMBS - Intrepid, aren't you? Those weird holes may beg exploring, but go too deep and you're going to be in a lot of trouble, considering the viciousness of the creatures held within.
8. THE CITY STREETS - All told, Ruby City is a lovely place, once you get past the fact that several of the buildings look derelict and on the verge of falling down. There's no harm in doing a little sightseeing.
9. THE PARK - You thought it'd be a lovely stroll, but the park is anything but friendly, if those approaching wolf-like creatures are any indication.
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like what we've come up with? Feel like picking your own place? There's a whole host of lovely locations to choose from in the City.
Scenarios
1. NEW ARRIVAL - Step off that train, walk down the street. People usually latch on to newcomers to try and help them out. Even if you look shy, the other residents probably won't be!
2. WATCH TALK - Feeling lost? Disoriented? Don't worry, everyone feels that way on their first day. Fortunately - if the signs at the station are to believed - the watch in your pocket can be used to talk to whoever else might be here.
3. BAD WEATHER - Aw, man. Whether it's snow, or rain, or just plain cold, today was definitely the wrong day to get dumped off in a City in the middle of nowhere.
4. A RUN-IN - Maybe you weren't watching. Maybe they weren't. Either way, you just bumped into someone. Perhaps apologies are in order?
5. HELP, IT HURTS - Clumsy, aren't you? Perhaps wherever the train brought you from wasn't so friendly, or you just tripped and twisted your ankle. Either way, you're in a bit of pain. Hopefully someone will notice your booboos and help patch you up.
6. HUNGRY - It isn't very obvious sometimes that restaurants are what they are, especially in a place like Ruby City. Where can a person go to get a bite to eat around here?
7. MISTAKEN IDENTITY - Hey, there's someone you know! --Or maybe not.
8. BEING FOLLOWED - Maybe you're just being paranoid, or maybe you've got a reason to be afraid. Whatever it is, it feels like there's eyes on you...
9. EVENTS - Feel free to look through our event tag!
10. CHOOSE YOUR OWN - Don't like any of these ideas? Feel free to come up with your own!
hak | yona of the dawn
[One of the benefits of arriving in a strange place still furnished with your very own extremely lethal weapon is that there's no question as to what to do first. Not that there ever is, with Hak; he so rarely hesitates, could probably stand to do it more, but in a crisis, at least, he's dependable.]
[The trouble, the first thing he needs to fix, is that no one is here to depend on him. That isn't correct. This isn't Kouka, of course, but that's a secondary concern. He was brought here by an enemy, obviously, and as such his job is to kill them and find Yona, not necessarily in that order. Ideally not in that order.]
[He could really do with a handful of dragons right now. Figures that when you need them they're nowhere around.]
[In any case: he starts making his way away from the train station. He won't get far, though. Because the first person he meets, if they get close enough, will have the blade of his hsu quandao resting delicately against their throat and a blank, Very Done stare leveled in their direction.]
Take me to whoever's in charge. And do it quickly if you don't want to get a lot shorter.
[He's so cool.]
two. network
[Witness: one staring face. Hak is lots of things, many of them good, even, but none of them are tech savvy, so. He just starts poking at the buttons at a fairly dizzying speed. Whoop, his screen's turned sideways. Whoop, it's black and white now. Black and white and upside down. Sepia! Who knew. Normal again, and—]
[And now it's voice. There's silence for a moment before he speaks, flatly.]
Did it stop doing that? Finally. Who needs that . . .
I need new clothes. These have blood on them. Where can I find those?
[A beat. And another. Eventually:]
It's not mine.
one;
I should imagine if you go about beheading everyone who can't give you a satisfactory answer, you'll find yourself escorted to an authority quite quickly, albeit not the one you have in mind.
no subject
[He doesn't believe in the legend, the prophecy. All of that is, has always been, and will always be irrelevant to him. His concern begins and ends with Yona. But her hair is nearly as vibrant as Yona's is, and that makes him pause. Just for a second. One entire second.]
[He doesn't lower the hsu quandao, though.]
But you'll still be dead.
no subject
[She tips her head: not to move away, but to better focus her sights on him.]
no subject
Do you really think this is the time to be lying?
no subject
no subject
[He shrugs.]
I don't care either way. If I have to kill you, there are other people I can get information from. You're the only one with anything to lose here.
no subject
[Though she still doesn't sound all that fussed about it. Still:]
As near as I can figure out, you might want to start by that giant conspicuous ruby obelisk. I've heard some of those who say they run the city can be found there.
no subject
[He glances up towards the obelisk, then back to Rosalind, then back to the obelisk. It seems to pass his inspection, for whatever that's worth. He lowers his blade. Slightly.]
Thanks. I have another question, but I'm not going to ask it with a blade to your throat.
no subject
[Rosalind tips her head in a go on gesture.]
no subject
[Is he joking or is he actually this dense? Maybe both. Probably both.]
Looking for someone. Short, about here-- [He waves his hand at mid-chest level on him.] Short red hair. Bossy. Her name is Rina. You seen her?
no subject
[Which is both honest and possibly suicidal. So she adds:]
But if you'd like, I'll keep the name in mind. A companion of yours?
no subject
[He drums his fingers irritably against the handle of his weapon (THAT'S STILL WHAT SHE SAID), then shrugs loosely.]
You can if you like. I'll find her first if she shows up. We're not friends; I'm her bodyguard. She can't handle herself on her own.
[The first part of this is true. The latter statements are lies. They are friends; he is her blade, not her bodyguard; Yona could kill anyone who deserved it, with one notable exception.]
no subject
And if one was interested in hiring you?
no subject
[It shows, too. He gives Rosalind a dubious look, of which he's largely unaware, before reining it in.]
Depends on the terms. And the pay.
[Or whatever???]
no subject
no subject
[He waves his hand a little.]
That determines pay, too. I need to be paid equitable to probable effort expended.
(no subject)
One.
[It wouldn't have been the hardest thing to achieve, not with my bionic arm. Whoever the newcomer was, he wasn't the best at amicable first impressions. The blankness of his expression was indeed quite like Julian's.]
I would do it quickly if it was possible for me to do so. The ones we consider in charge aren't exactly in charge. And they come and go from here as they please, unlike us.
Also, it wasn't going to be quite what you expected.
no subject
[His weapon doesn't twitch. Doesn't lower an inch. If anything, he looks bored. The truth is this guy's life doesn't matter to him. He could be one of Soo-Won's, for all Hak knows. He'll have to die regardless if that's the case.]
Do better, or start moving.
no subject
[Julian's mouth almost curled into something that would resemble a smile. Almost.]
Most of the inquiries you have can be best answered by someone who's been here more than a year, but you're stuck with me. I know this place well enough, though. You'll get results.
First up, [he began, calmly holding the blade of the weapon at neck-level as he started walking – specifically using his bionic arm,] the Overseers are who you're looking for. There's seven of them, eight if you count the one that called himself the spirit of the city, but they haven't talked to anyone in person as far as I know while I've been here. They prefer the watch network.
[He was headed for the obelisk at the city's centre, compliant with the demand of the blade at his neck but completely ignoring the death threat behind it. He'd disarmed gunmen from similar ranges without a shot being fired; this was no worse a situation in his eyes.]
Speaking of that, you should have a brass pocket-watch on your person somewhere. It's a timepiece as well as a way to send text-based messages, make open or private live video calls with the option to lock out certain users if preferred or make voice-only calls wit the same functionality. If you lose your watch, it'll return to the same place you first found it, along with whatever grime or lack thereof stuck to it.
no subject
[This is helpful, at least, even if parts of it are a bit nonsensical. Helpful enough that after a moment, he lowers the blade, then swings it back over his shoulder.]
What is this . . . "video", "voice only". What is that?
no subject
[He actually half-smiled briefly at the lowered blade and the question, but it was only there long enough to be a twitch of the mouth.]
Video means that the little view-piece of this item [he pulled out his own watch and gestured at its display, which showed what the device's camera could see] you see here shows a real-time feed of the person on the other side. It's like talking to someone face-to-face, but you can be out hunting in the forest while the person on the other end is walking through the library or enjoying the view from the clock tower. You just have to keep the watch pointed at whatever you want them to see.
Voice-only means they don't see anything, but they hear whatever the pocket-watch picks up on your end – what you say, your breathing if it's loud enough, other voices, the like. Most people opt for it if it's the middle of the night or they're on the move.
two;
[It's safe here.]
[Yona has told herself that over and over and over again. True, "safe" is somewhat a relative term for this place. There are still dangers beyond the city and even a few that manage to creep within when the powers that hold their sway over this place begin to shape and manipulate the people and the city around them. But it's safe here for her. For Yona. She doesn't have to hide her hair. She doesn't have to be Rina. Her enemies — or rather her enemy and the men he's brought to heel — are not here.]
[It's safe here. It's safe here. It's safe here.]
[If she doesn't say it, she forgets. But she says it to herself, and it gives her the courage to say,]
H-Hak...?
[Because it means it's safe here for him, too. It's safe to say his name without worrying about the consequences. Still, she's afraid that she's just seeing and hearing things because it is safe. He doesn't need to be here to look after her, or keep making good on his stupid promise to stick annoyingly close to her like he's reminded her over and over that he will. Her heart is pounding in her chest and she's grateful not to be holding her watch herself or he'd know how much her hands are shaking even if he can already see the ways her eyes are already starting to glisten. She hates it sometimes when she cries because it sometimes makes her feel small, weak, and helpless. Like all she can do is cry. But if the tears get to be too much for her to hold back right now, Yona doesn't think she'll mind them.]
[It won't be a bad cry for a change.]
no subject
[Yona is here. Yona is here, he looked for her and he couldn't find her, he looked and looked, where was she when he was looking? He failed. He looked in the wrong places. How long has she been alone, who is she with, who is protecting her in his absence?]
[He's struck with a stab of emotion too complex to put a name to, too many things mashed together to simplify into one or two or three things, tied together with a single but prominent thread of guilt. Whether he meant to or not, he abandoned her — the one thing he swore never to do. Intent doesn't matter; action does. She has been alone. Alone.]
[But he can't show her his panic. He can tell just from her tone that she's upset, and when he looks at the screen again it's clear she's close to tears. Another reason to be grateful for the voice function — she couldn't see the look that crossed his face when she first spoke, in all of its complexity.]
[He has to be stone. And he can. As long as she can't see his face, he can be solid and dependable, at least for a little while.]
It's me.
[His lips part to form the word princess, but he hesitates. She's prudent, and she did say his name, but it's better to be safe. He closes his mouth, pauses, then tries again.]
Not like this. Tell me where you are.
no subject
There's a building next to the stables, it's in the southern part of the city. That's where I am. [Where she's living. There was once a time in her life — a large part of it, in fact — where she would have taken sleeping inside night after night to be a given. Now it feels like such a luxury. Though sometimes when she's lying in the dark of her room, she misses the smell of a campfire and the soft sounds of everyone's breathing.] I'll wait for you outside.
[So he knows he's found the right place. Though Yona's already found there's more than just her as far as people with red hair are concerned.]
