7. Le Cafe Anglais: A Parisian-British fusion that's as charming as it sounds and serves the best tea around.

Peter Parker | The Amazing Spiderman | Clocktower

[spideys]

[ For a moment, there's a friendly neighbourhood teenage boy perched atop the Clocktower, hoping to get a sight of where he came from so he can get back.

But his explorations prove more or less fruitless and all he sees are trees and ... is that a mountain range? Well, he's looking for a big city like the one he's used to, anyway, and he's not seeing any of the familiar skyscrapers.

He climbs back down the length of the clocktower's exterior facade and lands on his feet with the grace of someone who has no problems whatsoever climbing things (or swinging on them, as it were).

And there's an audible sigh to anyone who might be around. ]

Well, this is gonna be a problem.

[leekspins]

How did you do that?!

[Whoops, looks like someone was watchiing you, Peter. How could she not? There aren't many super high buildings, so when she sees someone easily climbing the sheer surface of one of the tallest places in the city, she noticed, and her curiosity was easily piqued. At least she doesn't look scared. If anything, she looks excited.]

That was amazing! Ah ha ha, I love seeing what other powers people have in this place!

[spideys]

[ Peter will take excited over scared any day. He's the Spider-Man. He's not supposed to be scary. He's supposed to be a hero.

Or at least ... that's what he's aiming for.

Of course, that doesn't stop him from being a little shy and bashful about what he's capable of. He's not very good at people. Oops. ]

Uh ... the climbing? It's just something I can do.

[ Never mind how it became something he could do.

He flexes his fingers a little and gives her a shy-ish grin accompanied by running a hand through his unkempt mop of hair. ]

Are there others with powers here? Do you have a power?

It seems useful! It would be hard to be afraid of heights if you could do something like that, ne?

[Given his question, Orihime can guess that he's probably new here. And he seems nice! The city could stand to have more people like that around, honestly.]

Mm, I do. And I'd say...more than half of the people here have some sort of supernatural talent? It's actually pretty rare to meet someone without some unusual knack.

[Since he told her his, she supposes there's no need to be modest.]

I can heal, create shields, and fight monsters with an offensive skill, and I can sense souls that have a great deal of power. So if you get hurt, you know who to call, I suppose!

[spideys]

Yeah, it would suck to be afraid of heights and have this kind of ability.

[ Kind of a waste, really.

As to the rest, he nodnodnods along to it all. A part of him is especially curious about the shields and the soul-sensing, which seem a lot more 'magic' than 'science. ]

Wow, sounds like you've got a lot of really cool abilities. Fighting monsters? Uh. Is that a common thing to do here?

[leekspins]

You think so?

[She perks up, beaming happily. It's nice to hear! As for the monster fights being common...]

Well...it can be.

[She looks behind her, off in the direction of the park.]

The majority of the city is pretty safe. The only places you're likely to run into trouble is outside the city boundaries, in the catacombs, or around the park.

[Suddenly she blinks, and knocks her knuckles lightly against her temple.]

Ah ha ha, sorry! I'm saying all of these things and haven't even introduced myself yet!

[She bows in greeting.]

Orihime Inoue. Pleased to meet you!

[spideys]

Peter Parker. It's nice to meet you too.

[ And he means that. Being kidnapped against your will to a brand new place you've never even heard of is already kinda unnerving. Add unfriendly faces and the experience can be downright miserable.

Pete shifts his gaze past Orihime's shoulder towards the park. ]

Also: duly noted. Not gonna be exploring the outside boundaries too soon.

[ At least not until he has a better idea of what he's in for. ]

Orihime. That's Japanese, right?

Yes it is, you're very sharp! I guess you're from Earth too, then!

[She's so tickled that he could guess her native country.]

And you're...ah...well you're definitely a Westerner, but I'm not very good at placing accents just yet. How long have you been here? Have you found a place to stay?

Are ... there people here not from Earth?

[ Maybe that makes sense, maybe it doesn't. He's not entirely sure what to make of it yet. ]

I'm from New York in America. And I've been here ... [ He checks his watch. ] Maybe a few hours? I got off this train to get my bearings and came up here to get a better look at what I was dealing with.

[ He shrugs, bashful. ]

So - uh. No place to stay. No clothes or anything either. Just a half-dead cellphone and like, twenty bucks.

[Ah, so his accent is from New York! It's interesting, that's for sure. But wow, only a couple of hours?]

I'm impressed, you're handling everything so well! You might want to turn your cell phone off to preserve what power is left, since there isn't any electricity here. And the money won't help much, since everything is free. Having no economy is definitely one of the perks of staying here! Let's see, what else...

[She glances skyward, tapping on her fingers.]

We covered monsters, how to eat, lots of people from different planes and worlds and timelines...oh! Also, you don't have to worry about time moving onward without you back home. We can't influence WHEN we leave this place, but we arrive at the exact same point we left, and can't remember anything about this place when we're back home.

[spideys]

That's ... weird.

[ Yup. Eloquent as always, Peter.

He laughs. ]

Sorry, so this place is like ... stuck in time? A fixed point? Except we're obviously allowed to move around and go forward.

[ He is mostly thinking aloud, sorry Orihime. ]

Do people still age here?

[ In the meantime, he pulls out his phone and follows her advice. Power Off in 3 ... 2 ... 1. Okay. ]

I'm not really sure. I haven't been here long enough to find out, but my hair is getting longer, so...I think so. Ah ha ha, but I couldn't say what happens if you go home and come back! I think you're right about it being fixed in time, though.

[She's just glad he trusts her enough to take her advice. It'd be awful if he were suspicious and went into the park or the catacombs to test the truth of her words.]

Where do you want to live? There are apartments that have two bedrooms, and houses where lots of people can stay together.

[spideys]

[ Well, it's advice that makes sense. And anyone with a sense of self-preservation would listen to advice about staying away from danger, at least until they learn more about what they're up against.

Peter might be reckless sometimes - just ask anyone who knows him! - but he isn't stupid when it counts.

He looks at her hair and smiles. ]

Uh ... anywhere's fine. I'm not really picky. Back home I live with my aunt.

I'm glad time stops while I'm here. I can't imagine how worried she'd be if I was missing ...

[ :\ ]

[Orihime's smile warms. It sounds like they have something in common. She gets her living support from her aunt as well, though they don't live together. Something must have happened between him and his parents too, she reasons, though it's rude to ask about it just now. Maybe when she knows him better and vice versa.]

Well...do you know how to cook?

[spideys]

[ Sagely: ] I'm told I make a pretty decent omelette.

And I can blend things. [ There's a brief pause. ] Though a lack of electricity's going to be a problem.

Geez, I don't even know if I can imagine what it's like not having electricity. Or the Internet. Or cell reception.

It's a little difficult to get used to! We have to use actual ice for our refrigerators, ha ha!

[She's kind of tickled by it, though.]

I'd say if you can prepare your own meals pretty easily, you might prefer a house. But if you need help, there are probably some empty apartments in the building where I live. You're welcome to join me and my neighbor for dinner!

[...Except.]

...Although I suppose I should warn that some people say my tastes are a little strange.

[ That gets a raised eyebrow or two. All in good humour, of course.

He likes Orihime already. ]

Yeah? ... what kind of 'strange'?

[What a coincidence, she likes him too! Especially since he doesn't treat her eccentricity like stupidity. She's far from dumb, but she definitely has her own unique way of seeing things.]

Well, back home I didn't have much money, so I started out making a game out of seeing what I could make with what groceries were on sale. Then I thought, life is too short to keep eating the same thing! So now it's kind of a habit, to see what new kinds of dishes I can create.

[She beams, hitching her shoulders. Her cooking is weird, but no one's ever called it bad. She doesn't burn or undercook anything.]

If you don't like it, I can try to keep things simple.

[spideys]

No, no, that actually sounds awesome.

I'm used to the stuff my Aunt May cooks: meatloafs, pasta, that sorta thing. But I can't say I've had a lot of chances to try new things.

[leekspins]

Really?

[Because if he actually likes her food, then he's a rare treasure, like Rangiku and Grimmjow!]

I've never made a meatloaf before, but I'd like to try!

[Maybe with some minced lotus root and green onion, with teriyaki sauce instead of ketchup? It would be great served with pineapple too!]

Even if it turns out that you don't like my cooking, it's okay to say so. My desserts never get any complaints, so there will at least be one thing you're guaranteed to like. I can introduce you to Grimmjow-san too! He's not human, but he looks close enough like one that it won't be too weird.

[ Peter laughs, totally enjoying Orihime's enthusiasm. His taste palette isn't exactly sophisticated so he's probably easy to please. ]

Sure, I can be honest.

[ Sometimes. Well ... he'll try. He's not a huge fan of offending people trying to do nice things. His uncle would've frowned on that kind of behaviour. ]

Not-human, huh? What exactly is he, then? Mutant? Alien?

[ A reformed monster? ]

He's called an Arrancar, and since he's one of the ten strongest, he holds the rank of Espada too. Arrancars are kind of like vengeful spirits, except they've got more clarity of mind. They just don't feel things the way people still do because they're missing their hearts. It's actually a little sad!

[At least, she thinks so.]

He's changed a lot since he got here. But not entirely. Grimmjow-san can be a little rude, so please be patient with him!

[Actually, Peter might be a good influence. Orihime can only demonstrate so much as a girl. Peter, however, is a guy, so if Grimmjow has someone he can more easily relate to...]

It's always the rudeness that gets left behind.

[ He shakes his head, rueful. ]

[She shakes her head. This next part might be a little tough to explain, and they DID just meet. Does he really want to know her whole life story right from the get go? She's pretty sure he doesn't!]

It's a little complicated! And it's definitely a weird story to tell, you might think I'm crazy, ha ha!

Ne, are you hungry? We can get you something to eat on the way while I give you a tour of the city.

Crazy? Nah. After what I've seen and heard today, that's the last thing I'd think.

[ He smiles, a little apologetic. Besides, he's Spider-Man. It's kind of a crazy and weird story on its own, so he isn't one to talk.



Aaaand at the mention of food, his stomach grumbles too. ]
