PokeMania!

Hello, Ruby City! With less than a week left before the start of our third Rumor War event, we'd like to announce the details for PokeMania!


SUMMARY:

During this adventure/comedy event, Legendary (and Mythical, if additional capture opportunities are needed) Pokemon have been scattered across the island. Using one of two methods, player characters may take on the role of trainer and attempt to capture these creatures for the sake of a tournament to be held on final day of the event. With the promise of a wish granted awaiting the winner, who will claim the title of Pokemon Champion? Just remember: hijinks will ensue!

NPCs:

Gene Jecklin (Kindness) versus Ava Rice (Greed)

EVENT DURATION:

July 20 - 30

IC EFFECTS:

There will be no physical or mental changes to characters; however, Gene and Ava will grant all participating characters one Pokeball and one Escape Rope (an item which will transport them back to the Obelisk, no matter where they are on the island) every day they choose to search for Pokemon.

ENVIRONMENT CHANGES:

The only change to the environment will be a portal at the top of the Clocktower that leads to an alternate dimension (similar to the Distortion World) where certain Pokemon can be found. Otherwise, to cut down on travel time, the Gene and Ava will provide instant transport to a few locations outside the city: the forest (center), the plains (between the beach and lake), and the mountains (center). However, as the Pokemon franchise is based on travel and exploration, they cannot take characters straight to any Pokemon; this is the reason why only one encounter is allowed per day.

PLAY CHANGES:

Capture RNG -- Once a day, based on a random roll of numbers 1 through 10, characters will be able to attempt to catch the Pokemon spread across the island. One of two methods may be employed:

Forcible Capture

• This means of catching Pokemon is, theoretically, much quicker and more efficient, but it is very stressful for the Pokemon.


• Begins with a 20% success rate (must roll a 9 or 10).


• Chances can be increased by 20% for every additional character the first brings with them (two characters nets 40%, a roll of 7 through 10 would be successful; three characters nets 60%, a roll of 5 through 10 would be successful; etc.)

Befriending

• This means of capture is, theoretically, much slower and less efficient, but would be considered more humane.


• Also begins with a 20% success rate (must roll a 9 or 10).


• Chances will increase by 20% for every successive day a single character spends attempting to capture the same Pokemon (two days nets 40%, a roll of 7 through 10 would be successful; three days nets 60%, a roll of 5 through 10 would be successful; etc.)

For every day that participating characters choose to search for Pokemon, players must fill out the following form and post it beneath the comment headed with the day’s date:

All forms must be posted by 11:59EST every day so that the RNG can be run at midnight EST; the results will be posted shortly after. Pokemon can be found in the following locations:

• Alternate dimension (6)


• Watch towers (4)


• Catacombs (3)


• Hot springs (3)


• Field (6)


• Lake (3)


• Forest (2)


• Sea caves (2)


• Islands (2)


• Mountains (low altitude) (3)


• Mountains (high altitude) (4)

If you’re hoping for a particular Pokemon, keep in mind their natural habitat/where they are found in their respective games. Also note that, in their search, some characters may find a surprise waiting for them!

NETWORK CHANGES:

There will be no changes to the network.

REQUIRED SIGNUPS:

Signups are not required! Characters just need to handwave picking up their Pokeballs and they will be allowed to participate.

OPT OUT OPTIONS:

There are no specific steps to take for opting-out; simply don’t participate.

EVENT REWARDS:

All participants will receive one Trainer Card with record of all the Pokemon they caught or helped catch. In addition, they will receive a commemorative boxed set of badges from the player’s choice of league.

Please note that characters will NOT be allowed to keep their Pokemon after the event.

Hey mods, couple things. Your links in the event rewards are kind of broken and..!

Do players get to choose the starter Pokemon their character gets or is that randomized as well?

The links should be fixed now! And there will be no starter Pokemon.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood the Pokeball being given as one with a Pokemon in it. Oops!

Because they are who they are, Nadeshiko is going to try to capture one, and NAgihiko is going to try and capture one.

Well, at least one each.

While I presume that they would get ONE pokeball per day and ONE chance per day between them, if they sign up for the tournament under separate names (because they would to keep up the whole secret identity thing, and because this suits both personalities) how would that work?

Please note - I am NOT trying to get extra chances at winning, if anything, my guess is that splitting their focus like this makes them LESS likely to win, not more. I'm just trying to play them as they are, who they are.

You are correct: Nadeshiko and Nagihiko would receive only one Pokeball and have only one chance at catching a Pokemon per day. Were either of them to ask Gene or Ava about entering separately, they would be told that they may do so if they manage to catch two Pokemon -- but I wouldn't worry too much about the tournament, if I were you. ;)

Can I assume for the sake of participation that Deimonea'll be able to pick up the Pokeballs? Since she's ordinarily immaterial.

Yes, absolutely!

Will it be IC knowledge that the PKM will disappear after the event is over? AKA will Ava and Gene share that tidbit of information with the citizens before any PKM are captured?

Though Gene may pretend he knows what's going on, none of the Virtues or Vices ever have a sure idea of what Ikaros is up to, so neither Gene nor Ava would be able to tell player characters that the Pokemon will disappear at the end of the event.

... do characters with an affinity for animals maybe possibly sort of get any sort of boosted chances for befriending the pokeymans? Asking purely hypothetically, of course.

Also, is there any sort of penalty for hoarding pokemon like a lunatic and outright refusing to battle under any circumstances.

Unfortunately no, we will not be allowing particular abilities or traits to give any characters boosted chances at catching Pokemon. Sorry!

And no, there will not be an NPC-dealt penalty for that. (:

SO! If Skuld takes a Pokeball apart and uses it as part of an invention, what happens to that invention at the end of the event?

Ibuki doesn't really care for this capturing (or befriending) animals just to get them to fight, so if any of her friends want her to help capture pokemons she'll do her best for them.

If multiple people want her help then those with closest CR will get priority based on an arbitrary rating that I'll have to make up if demand is high.

Awesome! I'll have to look for that! I have Nadeshiko dancing in the field right now. She's hoping to find pokemon, yes, but more, she's just... loving having the space to dance and would love an audience.

Ahaha Ibuki doesn't... really need to attend a dance academy but she could play some metal for their dancing if they want??? Or if they befriend her enough she can be convinced to do calmer music from time to time...

... then again she might want to take Mikan and Kazuichi there for some dance lesson... hm....

Competitive combat is, like, totally a Gensokyo thing, so I suspect Tojiko will get into it more than anybody else.
